Marvel Villains Ranked: Thanos, High Evolutionary, and Beyond!

New DVD release
This article contains spoilers Bring on the bad guys! That’s been the battle cry of the Marvel Universe since before it was even called the Marvel Universe. The first few issues of Fantastic Four in the early 60s gave the world some of the best villains of all time, including the Mole Man and Doctor Doom. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, didn’t start out so well. For a long time, the big knock against the MCU was that it had great heroes and lousy villains. Sure, everyone likes Loki, but no one thought Malekith or Red Skull upstaged Thor and…

Mission Unremarkable: Gal Gadot’s Heart of Stone Bores Even by Netflix Standards

New DVD release
If Heart of Stone has any distinctive visual moments, they all involve a supercomputer called the Heart. The Heart appears in the form of holographic images surrounding operator the Jack of Hearts (Matthias Schweighöfer), who moves around digital objects and zooms in on key details by waving his hands and touching objects. Yes, we’ve seen many similar depictions of supercomputers ever since Tom Cruise stared intensely at future crimes in 2002’s Minority Report and Tony Stark threw hot rod red on his suit in 2008’s Iron Man. Heck, we’ve seen Jeff Goldblum wave his shockingly large hands around cg-landscapes in…

Last Voyage of the Demeter Got Liam Cunningham to Break His Game of Thrones Adaptation Rule

New DVD release
After seven seasons of playing the legendary sea captain Ser Davos Seaworth on Game of Thrones, as well as appearing as the infamously luckless captain of the Demeter in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Irish thespian Liam Cunningham has a confession to make. He doesn’t like boats. Don’t misunderstand him. Cunningham’s got buddies with boats. Some of his best friends, in fact, captain their own sea vessels. But Cunningham? He gets seasick. When he goes boating with pals he even has to psych himself up because he’s “always expecting to be nauseous soon.” And as he confides with a raconteur’s twinkle, “I…

The Fugitive and the Brilliance of Tommy Lee Jones’ ‘I Don’t Care’ Line

New DVD release
The Fugitive was not the movie audiences expected when they walked into their local cinemas 30 years ago. Designed to be a splashy star vehicle for Harrison Ford that summer, the film was an action-thriller, obviously, and one that even back then was banking on name recognition and brand familiarity—in this case for a 1960s television series that aired on ABC. Still, few moviegoers or critics expected it to wind up on end of year lists, or for it to be included in conversations about the best movies of 1993. But it was, including when it was nominated for Best…

Star Trek 4 Gets a Disappointing Update

New DVD release
“You really wanna head back out there, huh?” Although Captain Kirk doesn’t answer this question posed by his friend Dr. McCoy at the end of Star Trek Beyond, we all know his answer. Whatever differences between the fatherless Kirk of the Kelvin timeline, played by Chris Pine, and his Prime Universe counterpart played by William Shatner, the two Captains share a love of adventure that keeps them coming back to their beloved ship and searching for the unknown. And yet, we’ve never had the chance to see what’s next for the Enterprise-A of the Kelvin Universe. According to Spock actor…

The Hong Kong Kung Fu Movies You Need to Watch Next If You Already Love Bruce Lee

New DVD release
There are Kung Fu movies. Then there are Hong Kong Kung Fu movies. Starting in the ’70s, Hong Kong filmmakers dominated the martial arts genre with a unique brand of Hong Kong ballistic action, white-knuckle stunts, and exquisite fight choreography. Towering Hong Kong studios like Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest were the prolific grindhouses that brought us Bruce Lee and so many other action movie stars at an astonishingly bounteous rate. If you’re already familiar with Bruce Lee’s work in Hong Kong cinema and aren’t sure where to go next on your martial arts movie journey, or which stars’ filmographies…

America Ferrera’s Barbie Speech Continues Greta Gerwig’s Conversation with Women

New DVD release
Even before I saw Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, I knew to expect a big moment. I’d glimpsed excerpts from America Ferrera’s monologue, condensed into tweet form and pasted onto pink Instagram slides. Even as I tried to stay “unspoiled” on the words themselves before I got to the film during its first week of Barbie’s release, I knew that at a pivotal point in the film there would be this show-stopping speech. Thankfully, expecting it did little to dampen how moving it was in the moment. As Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) is reeling from an existential crisis, and about to give…

A Helpful Guide to the Skarsgård Family Cinematic Universe

New DVD release
Keeping it in the family is very much a Hollywood tradition at this point, and in the 21st century acting families are still thriving. Whether it be Cuba Gooding Jr.’s son Mason joining the cast of the last two Scream movies, Lily-Rose Depp leading The Idol, Maya Hawke becoming a fan favorite in Stranger Things, or Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory) roaming the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek, there’s always a new generation of nepo babies lurching from crib to screen. But one man is overwhelmingly leading the pack in terms of famous male offspring these days. A…

Barbie 2 Could Return Creative Power to Stars Like Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling

New DVD release
It opened less than three weeks ago as we write this, but Barbie has already crossed the threshold at the entrance to the billionaire’s club—that short list of films which have grossed more than one billion bucks at the box office. As Greta Gerwig’s fantasy/social satire/weirdo musical shows no signs of slowing down (it’s headed for $500 million in North America alone), no doubt the champagne corks are popping all over the Warner Bros. Pictures studio lot and offices, and plans for a sequel are being developed as we speak. Or maybe not. While just about every other movie that…

Barbie’s Billion Dollar Success Should Not Be Treated Like a Fluke

New DVD release
In the weeks leading up to the release of Barbie last month (not to mention the SAG-AFTRA strike), actress and producer Margot Robbie revealed just how hard she had to pitch taking a chance on what was an elevated interpretation of a Barbie movie… Robbie had to also pitch why she wanted to make it a Greta Gerwig movie. “I think my pitch in the greenlight meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie told Collider. “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs…

Canceled Marvel Movie Would Have Completely Changed an Avenger’s Story

New DVD release
It ain’t easy being green in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with it being no secret that Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk is the black sheep of the Avengers family. Premiering in 2008 as the second MCU outing, it’s the only Phase One movie not to get a sequel. We’ve come a long way from the early days of the Green Meanie, most notably as The Incredible Hulk was Edward Norton’s only time in the role before Mark Ruffalo took over for The Avengers. As things come full circle and we revisit some of these forgotten arcs, Leterrier has revealed his…

The Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies of the 1960s

New DVD release
The cinema of science fiction began to mature in the 1950s, concurrent with the arrival of the Cold War and the Atomic Age, as well as the growing sophistication of the literature. But it was during the 1960s that the genre really began to expand in different directions, still heavily influenced by the ideological paranoia and existential dread of the previous decade, but finding even more distinctive expressions of it. At the same time, the 1960s was also the decade in which sci-fi movies truly started to become event films, not just B-movies and drive-in fodder, as evidenced by the…

It’s Time to Give Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ninja Rap’ from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II Its Due

New DVD release
“Ninja rap” might just be the Rosetta Stone of early ‘90s pop culture. For only during this brief and extraordinary moment could a musical act like Vanilla Ice in supersized shoulder pads—and with a slicked-back pompadour that made it look as if he just stepped out of the shower—reign supreme as the fastest-selling hip hop artist ever. Also only in that same context could he then be convinced to appear in a movie where he’d dance on stage with full-grown men wearing elaborate puppeteer costumes that made them resemble a beloved Saturday morning cartoon show. Yet in 1991 all these…

New DVD release
This Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles article contains spoilers. Where’s the Shredder?! For all of the youthful energy of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Mutant Mayhem, for all the fun it is to see deep-cut characters like Mondo Gecko and Wingnut hit the big screen, for as much fun as big baddie Superfly certainly is, fans are still wondering about the absence of the most dangerous villain to cross paths with the heroes in a half shell. On one hand, Shredder’s absence does make sense. Mutant Mayhem reboots the series in the most radical way yet, not only giving…

We went into the final movie in James Gunn‘s Marvel trilogy, his final MCU film before co-heading DC Studios for Warner Bros, expecting a few deaths. The Negative Legacy of Jaws Continues in All Shark Movies

New DVD release
No study of film is complete without the inclusion of the shark. Cinema has long told stories of man’s eternal battle with monsters, real or otherwise. Yet over the decades, no animal has endured so thoroughly as that on-screen nemesis like the humble shark. There’s always time for a shark movie, including this summer with the release of Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2. Indeed, our very (mis)understanding of the creature is rooted in its movie history. Film has an incredible ability to reimagine the world around us, but its eternal insistence on turning the shark into a merciless killing machine for…

From Banned Nunchucks to Sausage Links: Why the UK Hated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

New DVD release
When Ralph Macchio first appeared on the big screen as Daniel LaRusso, decked out in his now trademark white Karate Gi uniform, he effectively ushered in a bold new era of children’s entertainment. 1984’s The Karate Kid wasn’t just director John G. Avildsen applying the uplifting sports movie formula that had worked so well on one of his previous efforts, Rocky, in a new kid friendly context; it was also a film that helped take martial arts into the Western mainstream. Suddenly American and European kids were joining dojos in hopes of emulating “Daniel Son.” But The Karate Kid was…

There’s a Clear Reason Why Oppenheimer’s Dialogue Can Be So Hard to Hear

New DVD release
Most modern moviegoers consider Christopher Nolan to be one of the greatest directors of our generation. But that claim comes with a caveat about the treatment of dialogue in his films. Ever since Batman grumbled something about not wearing hockey pads in The Dark Knight, audiences have criticized Nolan’s sound design, with some complaining that he doesn’t know how to mix dialogue and others insisting that his approach is part of his cinematic vision. While that debate hasn’t been quite as heated concerning his latest film Oppenheimer, certainly not compared to its predecessor Tenet, enough grumbles have filtered through that…

Ben Affleck’s Canceled Batman Movie Was Much Bigger Than We Thought

New DVD release
“I often wonder,” the Joker chides Batman, staring at his enemy through the haze of a post-apocalyptic desert. “How many alternate timelines do you destroy the world because, frankly, you don’t have the cojones to die yourself?” For fans of the Snyderverse, that little tidbit from Zack Snyder’s Justice League felt like a cruel tease, a reference to multiversal adventures that would never actually arrive on screen. Most fans likely assumed that the original plan was for these stories to unfold in a Justice League sequel, possibly one pitting Batman against Superman and Darkseid to create the oft-glimpsed Knightmare reality.…

Should Christopher Nolan Finally Make a James Bond Movie?

New DVD release
Christopher Nolan has made no secret of his love for the James Bond franchise over the years, telling Playboy in 2017 that “I deeply love the character.” That affection for 007 is evident in a lot of Nolan’s filmography as well, from the climactic action scenes of Inception to many of the narrative tropes of Tenet (minus of course the traveling backward in time). It even connects to the supervillains and gadgets of his Dark Knight films, which share a certain DNA with the Bond canon. Nolan admitted to the heavy influence of the Bond films—particularly the ones he grew…
