The Last of Us HBO Series Set Photos Hint at Left Behind Flashback Scene

New DVD release

The latest leaked photos and videos from the set of HBO’s The Last of Us suggest that the series will prominently feature the fascinating story presented in the game’s highly acclaimed DLC expansion, Left Behind. For those who don’t know, 2014’s The Last of Us: Left Behind is the franchise’s only narrative DLC expansion (at least so far). Most of the expansion is actually an extended flashback sequence that follows Ellie and her friend Riley as they explore an abandoned mall. As you might have already guessed given the tragic nature of the rest of the games, their adventure is…

Archive 81 Explained: Kaelego, Otherworld, Baldung Witches, and More

New DVD release

This article contains spoilers for Archive 81. Like all great horror stories, Netflix’s Archive 81 starts off small.  Film conservator Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie) is approached by a mysterious corporate benefactor, Virgil Davenport (Martin Donovan) to restore some tapes from the ‘90s. Somehow this simple job escalates into a pulse-pounding supernatural mystery that incorporates a Roaring Twenties era demonic cult, mold that bends time and space, and an honest-to-goodness Lovecraftian horror. It’s easy to see why Archive 81 has caught on with viewers. The show spent several days in the number one spot on Netflix’s “Top Ten” feature before Ozark…

Snowpiercer Season 3 Episode 1 Review: The Tortoise and the Hare

New DVD release

This Snowpiercer review contains spoilers. Snowpiercer Season 3 Episode 1 One of the strongest features of Snowpiercer is the show’s ability to figure out ways to create claustrophobia. Granted, that’s easy on a train; it’s not exactly the sort of environment in which you can spread out and social distance from your neighbors. On the last train, however, that situation is even more dire, especially if you’re in third class or stuck in the tail. The people on board Snowpiercer toil away elbow to elbow with their fellows, making clothes, breaking up ice, cooking and growing food, even entertaining in…

Pokémon Timeline: Every Major Game in Chronological Order

New DVD release

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a game of many firsts for the Pokémon franchise. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, players wander the verdant land of Hisui, before it became Sinnoh and before Pokémon were ingrained into the culture.  The Pokedex doesn’t exist yet; the villainous Team Galactic is known as the altruistic Galaxy Expedition…

Mel Brooks Recalls Alfred Hitchcock’s Unique Review of High Anxiety

New DVD release

Mel Brooks has made a career out of poking fun at other filmmakers and the conventions they deploy. This sweet and largely underutilized form of parody was often done with love and affection, but it could still leave a mark. Just ask some Western fans about Blazing Saddles (1974) or George Lucas about Spaceballs (1987), the latter of which he gave his blessing to but insisted that Brook never merchandise or use to compete with the Star Wars toy line. Yet for all of Brooks’ frivolity, there was only one time he was desperate to get the approval of his…

Elden Ring Is Perfect For Gamers Who Thought Dark Souls Was “Too Difficult,” Says Producer

New DVD release

In a recent interview, Elden Ring producer Yasuhiro Kitao addressed the always controversial topic of the game’s difficulty by suggesting that FromSoftware designed many elements of the open-world RPG to appeal to those who were intimidated by some of the studio’s previous games. “[Elden Ring] is the perfect title for those who have been interested in our games in the past but who have been put off by concerns about the games being too difficult,” Kitao says in response to a question about FromSoftware’s reputation. While that may anger some FromSoftware fans who dread the day that the studio will…

Trigger Point Episode 1 Review: Bomb Disposal Thriller Is No Damp Squib

New DVD release

Warning: this Trigger Point review contains spoilers. For all its ‘oh shit Sarge’ tension, there’s a serene simplicity to new ITV thriller Trigger Point. Episode one takes place in a single location, in a single time period, with two main characters so far exhibiting no signs of the post-traumatic flashback syndrome that sadly afflicts so many other prime-time TV leads. Joel ‘Nut’ Nutkins and Lana ‘Wash’ Washington have work to do, and they do it, while taking regular breaks to rehydrate with cans of energy drink. For these two bomb disposal operatives, A1 intelligence of a bomb factory on a…

The Gilded Age Isn’t a Downton Abbey Prequel (But May As Well Be)

New DVD release

In 2012, riding high on the success of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes told a crowd at Bafta that he was considering writing a prequel. The spin-off would be about ladder-climbing yanks trying to pay their way into the sniffy social elite, and feature a young Lord and Lady Grantham. He, a fresh-faced toff weighted by ancestral burden, she a US debutante with a daddy as riche as Croesus but in the undesirable nouveau way. The prequel would dramatise “the courtship of Robert and Cora, when all those American heiresses were arriving in London – the Buccaneers, as they were called.”…

The Best Serial Killer Shows to Watch After Dexter: New Blood

New DVD release

Dexter: New Blood likely represents the end of TV’s favorite serial killer: Dexter Morgan. Though the franchise may carry on with some sort of “Son of Dexter” setup, star and executive producer Michael C. Hall seems more than happy to hang up his Dark Passenger for good.  Through eight seasons and one limited series, Dexter was the cream of the crop when it came to serial killing storytelling on TV. That’s probably because shows that inhabit the mind of serial killers are quite rare for understandable reasons. It’s dark in there. Dexter “got away” with it because his code required…

The Real WW2 History of Netflix’s Munich: The Edge of War

Netflix, New DVD release

One of the best aspects about Netflix and director Christian Schwochow’s Munich: The Edge of War is how acutely it makes you feel like it’s 1938. With its clandestine midnight meetings in hotel rooms and ministry offices, and its strained government officials struggling to grasp the full horror of what’s staring them in the face, the new film reminds audiences of the indecision and uncertainties which clouded the view for many on the path to World War II. Yet with the film’s thriller plotting—complete with a last ditch effort by a German official to meet with British Prime Minister Neville…

Meat Loaf Should Have Had Two Parts in The Rocky Horror Picture Show

New DVD release

Meat Loaf, whose real name is Marvin Lee Aday, leaves behind a versatile legacy in film and music, but will forever be associated with two major cultural contributions. One is his 1977 album Bat Out of Hell. Produced by Todd Rundgren, it sold over 50 million copies, and several of the songs remain radio and satellite staples. The other is his turn as Eddie in the musical comedy sci-fi cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The rock and rolling biker who gave half his brain for science was only half of the character Meat Loaf played onstage. He also…

How The Batman Theme Recalls Michael Giacchino’s Video Game Soundtracks

New DVD release

While the release of composer Michael Giacchino’s theme for The Batman has some thinking about the works of fellow caped crusader composers like Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer, those familiar with Giacchino’s career may detect more than a few callbacks to his video game roots in this compelling track. For those who don’t know, Giacchino began his composing career in the video game industry where he quickly made a name for himself working on the soundtracks for various Disney games. However, it was his work on the PlayStation adaptation of The Lost World: Jurassic Park (one of the first console…
