Hulu New Releases: January 2022

New DVD release

When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back! With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well. Aside from HIMYF, there aren’t any other…

The Expanse Season 6: Who Is Rosenfeld?

New DVD release

Whether viewers of The Expanse season 6 enjoy Marco Inaros as a villain or not, one thing’s for sure: everyone’s rooting for his downfall. The ironic thing is he could almost defeat himself through sheer pigheadedness if not for the fearless advice of a rising star in the Free Navy, a character by the name of Rosenfeld Guoliang, played by Kathleen Robertson. We asked creators Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham as well as showrunner Naren Shankar about the new dynamic Rosenfeld creates in the show. Although Rosenfeld is a male character in the James S. A. Corey novels upon which…

Cobra Kai Season 4 Ending Explained

New DVD release

This article contains Cobra Kai spoilers Cobra Kai has mastered the season finale cliffhanger just like Daniel-san mastered ‘wax on, wax off.’ It started with its first season finale. That ended with the startling appearance of Sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove), which took the series to a whole new level. The season 2 finale literally tossed us off that cliff with Miguel’s (Xolo Maridueña) spine-breaking fall. And in the finale of season 3, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) are forced to unite for the ultimate showdown against Cobra Kai in the arena that started it all, the All…

While we’re still waiting for several of the year’s biggest games to finally get release dates (and delays are obviously always…

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Special: A Return to Hogwarts Doesn’t Address the Hippogriff in the Room

New DVD release

Roughly 10 minutes into HBO Max’s Harry Potter reunion special, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, Ron Weasley actor Rupert Grint comments on the surreality of it all.  “It doesn’t feel like much time has passed. It doesn’t feel like we’ve earned a reunion yet.” In true Weasley-ian fashion, Grint has intuitively identified something slightly off about this whole thing right from the get-go. Perhaps the Potter team hasn’t earned a reunion yet. Though the Warner Bros. series of films based on J.K. Rowling’s books began with Philosopher’s Stone in 2001, it ended just 10 years ago with Deathly…

Cobra Kai Season 4: The Best Karate Kid and Martial Arts Easter Eggs

New DVD release

This article contains Cobra Kai season 4 spoilers. Throughout the series, Cobra Kai has taken Easter egging to new levels with constant shout outs to the original Karate Kid film trilogy. Season 3 saw some major throwbacks with the return of Ali (Elisabeth Shue), Chozen (Yuji Okumoto), Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita), and more. That was a hard act to follow, but the return of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) was an enormous Easter egg from Karate Kid Part III, tapping the franchise’s deep lore.  However, it’s those esoteric Easter eggs that are the most tantalizing, the ones that are hidden in…

Young Justice Phantoms Teases One of the Worst Modern DC Stories

New DVD release

This Young Justice Phantoms review contains spoilers. Young Justice Season 4 Episode 13 Young Justice Phantoms hit its midseason break with this week’s episode, “Kaerb Ym Traeh!” And it was maybe the strongest episode of the season: lots of storylines were tied off, while the annoying motion comic section was cordoned off to an argument between the Lords of Chaos and Order, and Vandal Savage and the Phantom Stranger. Not moving any of the figures around wasn’t actually a problem there, because the motion wasn’t necessarily the point.  This week’s episode is also the first with a legitimate post-credits scene,…

We’ve all been there. You have a few drinks. Then a few more. Mate. In that diminished state, you’re good for nothing. You’re duvet fodder. And so to pass the time while your enzymes get to work breaking down that acetaldehyde, you legend, you’re going to need company. Not actual…

Cobra Kai Season 4: Inside The Return of Terry Silver

New DVD release

This article contains Cobra Kai spoilers. The return of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) has been a major selling point in promoting Cobra Kai season 4. The teasers have focused on the silhouette of him tying back his signature ponytail like Rambo cinching up his headband. Unlike the season 3 teasers which only hinted at the return of Chozen (Yuji Okumoto), there was no mistaking that Silver was coming back to Cobra Kai. For anyone new to the Cobra Kai universe, Silver was the main villain in the final film with Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) – The Karate Kid Part…

Sky Cinema: What’s New in January 2021?

New DVD release

Really, this one’s all about Pig isn’t it? The film in which Nicolas Cage plays a chef who embarks on a mission to retrieve his kidnapped best friend – a truffle-foraging pig. If you don’t want to watch that at least twice in January, then you may be beyond help. Other than that, Sky Cinema in the UK is offering the sequel to acclaimed horror A Quiet Place, which stars Cillian Murphy this time around, as well as videogame adaptation Monster Hunter (which didn’t do much to impress our reviewer back in December 2020, but who knows, it might be…

New DVD release

This review of The Expanse contains spoilers. The Expanse Season 6 Episode 4 It’s official: The Expanse is clearly treating its final season as though the story were continuing, leaving it up to the viewers to decide where everyone will end up. The emotional beats in “Redoubt” were wonderful and would have been right at home in a ten to thirteen episode season with hopes of renewal. It’s difficult to know how to feel about a story that’s delivering spot-on dialogue, flawless character development, and even a bit of action while simultaneously realizing that its audience will have to be…

You may now know all about your new wife’s hidden past, but there’s still the matter of you and daughter Kayleigh inadvertently tag-teaming to murder a man that neither of you knew you’d killed. The Lost Daughter Review: Olivia Colman Shines in Taut Netflix Drama

New DVD release

The Lost Daughter is the feature directorial and screenwriting debut of actor Maggie Gyllenhaal. And what a first effort it is. Based in a slim novel by Italian author Elena Ferrante, the film is structured as a psychological drama with overtones of a thriller, but it doesn’t bend to the expectations of those genres, functioning instead as a meditation on memory, motherhood and grief, all filtered through a superb, complex performance–as if we would expect less–from the great Olivia Colman. Colman plays Leda Caruso, a middle-aged professor of comparative literature who heads to a small seaside resort village in Greece…

The Best Comics of 2021

New DVD release

Last year, we said “…every work of art made in [2020] is a small miracle. Every comic creator who put irons in the fire in a year that certainly didn’t lack fires deserves gratitude and commendation.” That’s no less true in 2021, a year where days felt like months and each month somehow also passed like a half an hour. Creators who put themselves out there this year did so with even greater precarity and more than a dash of shattered hope. But they helped us get through it all, and we should be immensely grateful.  If you, like us,…

The Karate Kid Part III We’ll Never See

New DVD release

Cobra Kai continues to effectively mine the long-dormant characters and continuity of The Karate Kid film franchise. The strategy has yielded a successful series that basks in the built-in nostalgia of those old enough to recall the films’ heyday, and even fosters a new generation of fandom. However, the show’s fourth season taps into 1989’s The Karate Kid Part III with the heralded return of villain Terry Silver—a controversial callback, seeing as that film remains widely maligned. Interestingly, a radically different third entry was originally envisioned, one that would have taken the trilogy into time-travel territory. If the teasers for…

Link Tank: A Nod to Thor Hiding in Spider-Man: No Way Home

New DVD release

There was a blink, and you’ll miss it reference to Thor: Love and Thunder in Spider-Man: No Way Home. “There were so many things happening in Spider-Man: No Way Home that we probably were too overwhelmed to catch them all. From seeing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man struggle with his own life and identity to having our favorite villains back in action, the movie was a lot to take in in one sitting. As someone who has now seen it three times, I only just saw some of what Happy Hogan does on my third watch.” Read more at The Mary Sue A new…
