The Book of Boba Fett Could Finally Answer a Big Star Wars Question

New DVD release
Boba Fett’s return last season on The Mandalorian finally confirmed an idea that was long-reflected across decades of Star Wars comics and novels, that being his escape from an alleged millennium of digestion within the belly of the dreaded Sarlacc. While clues were visible on Boba’s face, a full explanation about how he eluded that Return of the Jedi-dealt fate was not provided. Fortunately, it appears that imminent spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett is bringing the answers. Temuera Morrison’s manifestation as Boba Fett fulfils a franchise destiny, with the actor having played the cloned character’s genetic template father,…

Link Tank: Should These Holiday-Set Flicks Count as Christmas Movies?

New DVD release
Die Hard (of course), Lethal Weapon, Batman Returns, Gremlins, and more are all set around the holidays, but should they count as Christmas movies? “While action addicts love to extol the Christmas themes of 1988’s Die Hard every time December rolls around, the Bruce Willis-led blockbuster has plenty of company in the no man’s land between ‘Definitely a Christmas movie; and ‘Definitely not a Christmas movie.’ From romantic comedies to rip-roaring thrillers, here are some other Hollywood hits that you can definitely justify adding to an upcoming holiday movie marathon (whether your guests like it or not).” Read more at Mental Floss On…

Lost in Space Season 3: All Your Robot Questions Answered

Netflix, New DVD release
This article contains spoilers for Lost in Space season 3. There’s nothing a human being loves to see on screen more than a robot.  Maybe it’s because the idea of a robot forces us to reckon with the act of creation and ultimately empathize with whatever created us having to watch helplessly as we stumble from one existential crisis to another. Or maybe it’s just because robots are cute and say “beep beep boop boop.” Whatever the reason, no sci-fi franchise understands humanity’s fascination with robots better than Lost in Space. The 1965 TV series established one of the all-time…

How Xbox Was Finally Proven Right in 2021

New DVD release
While I don’t think 2021 is going to be remembered as one of the all-time great years in gaming history, I am convinced that this will ultimately be remembered as the year that the Xbox team finally turned the corner and showed everyone that they’ve been right about quite a few things. The problem with praising any video game manufacturer over another (or any brand/product over its competition) is that it tends to trigger this consumerism defense mechanism that forces people to tell you why you’re wrong because their preferred product or brand is better. What I find truly remarkable…

Spider-Man: Kirsten Dunst Would Play Mary Jane Again in the MCU

New DVD release
Many of Kirsten Dunst’s most famous roles have been getting remade in the last few years. And Dunst is now commenting on this trend in a new interview. There was Florence Pugh playing Amy March in the Greta Gerwig remake of Little Women (a role which earned Dunst raves), and there is the impending television redo on AMC of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, which will certainly include a new iteration of Claudia, Dunst’s star-making role in 1994. And then there’s Mary Jane Watson. The girl next door in Spider-Man. While the character of Mary Jane hasn’t technically been…

Star Wars: How Boba Fett Defined a Generation of Lucasfilm Characters

New DVD release
On Dec. 29, Star Wars fans will finally get something they could only fantasize about in 1983: the further on-screen adventures of Boba Fett. It’s a Disney+ show almost 40 years in the making, and not just because the pre-Disney canon had already established Boba survived the sarlacc pit, but because the villain always seemed destined for something bigger than his six-ish minutes of screen time and four lines of dialogue in the Original Trilogy. Boba is a great example of the kind of zeitgeist-grabbing myth-making that has made Lucasfilm such a successful movie studio over the last 50 years.…

The Beatles: Get Back – George Harrison’s Photographer Problems

New DVD release
George Harrison was known as the quiet Beatle, and sometimes also wanted to be invisible. “Beatle George Harrison, above, is due in court here today to answer assault charges,” John Lennon reads from a newspaper in a scene in Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back. “Harrison is accused of assaulting a photographer last May as he and Beatle Ringo Starr left a nightclub.”  The accused looks fairly bewildered, as did much of the audience. The story intermittently creeps back into the documentary, making its presence known while Harrison largely ignores it and moves on. In The Beatles: Get Back, Jackson…

Ant-Man 3: First Look at Kang the Conqueror

New DVD release
We’ve known for quite some time that Jonathan Majors would be playing the villainous Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the third film in Peyton Reed’s trilogy about Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), and their crew of MCU misfits. This film is particularly notable because it’s the first to feature one of Marvel’s most legendary villains, the ever-confusing time traveler, Kang the Conqueror. As with so many first looks at new characters and designs from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this one has hit social media as a photo of a shirt worn by…

The Matrix Resurrections Finally Reveals the New Merovingian

New DVD release
The Matrix Resurrections has revealed most of its returning cast in the lead up to the film’s long-awaited release later this month. We’ve seen Keanu Reeves back as a more grungy Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as a leather jacket-wearing grease monkey version of Trinity, and even Daniel Bernhardt has suited up once again as Agent Johnson. But there are still a few other returners we haven’t seen, such as Jada Pinkett Smith’s Niobe, the ship captain who played a vital role in the two Matrix sequels. Then there’s Lambert Wilson’s elusive Merovingian, the grimy information broker and crime boss who was…

Batman: Danny DeVito Open to Penguin Return

New DVD release
Danny DeVito’s role as The Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns remains one of the most visually-haunting, brilliantly over-the-top villain performances in the history of the comic book movie genre, which was still in its infancy. Yet, in a sign of the genre’s current universe-entangled state, the idea of the actor reprising the role 30 years later at the tender age of 77—even as Colin Farrell prepares to debut his version of the character—is actually feasible. Indeed, DeVito has let it be known that he’d absolutely fan the flippers on the big screen once again. For DeVito, the character of Oswald…

West Side Story: Steven Spielberg Makes Musical a Turf War for America’s Soul

New DVD release
The fight is over before it begins. Steven Spielberg makes that much obvious in the opening shot of his West Side Story. From the picture’s first frame, the Upper West Side occupied by the sound and fury of the Sharks and Jets has been lost. How can it not be when audiences are immediately introduced to a collapsed and dilapidated building? Fire traps and abandoned slums which would look at home in one of Spielberg’s World War II movies are the spoils of gang warfare in this soulful reimagining of the Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical. The neighborhood’s a corpse…

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 3 Review: Choose to Live

New DVD release
The following contains STAR TREK: DISCOVERY spoilers Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 3  Star Trek: Discovery tries to serve multiple masters in Season 4 episode “Choose to Live” and the end results are predictably muddled. Perhaps it was always going to be difficult to balance Michael’s mission to track down a rogue Qowat Milat -who killed a Starfleet officer while stealing dilithium with Commander Stamets’s trip to Ni’var to collaborate with the Vulcan-run Science Institute. And that’s without throwing Book’s evolving grief, the attempt to move Gray’s consciousness to a synthetic body, and Tilly’s new self-improvement journey in there too. But…

The Roots of Riverdale: Archie Comics Turns 80

New DVD release
“It’s a golden age to be an Archie Comics fan right now,” says company president Mike Pellerito with infectious enthusiasm, adding “I just can’t imagine a better time.” The declaration is more than accurate, as the independently owned publisher is celebrating its 80th anniversary with the massive CW hit Riverdale entering its sixth season (one that will bring on board Kiernan Shipka’s teenage witch from the late, lamented Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as a guest star). Despite the TV success, comics are still Archie’s bread and butter, from the digest reprints that beg for impulse buys at the…

How House of the Dragon Rose from the Ashes of a Failed Game of Thrones Prequel

New DVD release
Game of Thrones is readying a return to Westeros in 2022 with House of the Dragon. Set around 200 years in the past, during the height of the Targaryens’ incestuous, dragon-riding royal reign, the series is the first of HBO’s ongoing prequel pursuits. However, it also represents an enormously expensive mulligan, since it arrives in the aftermath of an extravagant pilot produced for a completely different prequel project, which was not picked up and still languishes unseen by audiences. Interestingly, new details have surfaced regarding the nixed project’s price tag and how it directly led to the prequel series that…

The year is somehow already almost over! To celebrate another passage around the sun, Netflix is putting its best foot forward with its list of new releases for December 2021. The blockbusters continue apace from there with The Witcher season 2 premiering on Dec. 17, Emily in Paris season 2 on Dec.…
