Why Satan Visiting Riverdale Was Anything But Hellish

New DVD release

This RIVERDALE review contains spoilers. Riverdale Season 6 Episode 3 “If Rivervale is the final battleground between good and evil, is anybody’s soul safe?” With just two more episodes until the “Rivervale” experiment concludes, it is safe to say that the writers have perfectly utilized this break from their, what I will laughingly refer to as “traditional” storytelling, to completely revitalize the series creatively. Three weeks into the show’s sixth season and Riverdale is the most entertaining it has ever been — no small feat given that it accomplished this without its main character or usual narrative structure. And all…

15 Most Underrated Games of 2021

New DVD release

While I understand why some have called 2021 a “slow” year for video games (the challenges of developing during the Covid-19 pandemic delayed numerous games and clearly impacted the quality of others), a quick look at the sheer number of underrated games that managed to sneak under the radar this year reveals how deep the modern gaming industry really is. While it’s understanable that the average gamer doesn’t have nearly enough time or money to play every game they might enjoy even during a “slow” year, there’s alawys been something sad about the idea that there are games out there…

The MacGruber TV Series Is an Action-Comedy a Decade in the Making

New DVD release

You can’t have a naked performer use a flamethrower.  This is what MacGruber co-creators Jorma Taccone, John Solomon, and Will Forte were told by the fun-killing higher-ups, in no uncertain terms, when they set out to adapt their popular Saturday Night Live sketch-turned-feature-film into a TV series at Peacock. “We kept having these meetings where people would be like, ‘You know you can’t do this, right?’” Taccone says. “We were just like, ‘Yeah, but… we’re going to do it.’” Being told to not do something and then doing it anyway is fitting for both petulant action hero MacGruber (played by Forte)…

Next month, she will appear as Bugs in The Matrix Resurrections. We talked to the English actress about her part in this iconic franchise. Do you remember the first time you watched The Matrix? The Witcher Season 2 Will Push the Boundaries of Fantasy TV

Netflix, New DVD release

Netflix’s The Witcher is one of the streamer’s most popular offerings, an epic fantasy teeming with magic, monsters, and complex characters with weighty, potentially world-saving destinies shared between them. Its first season featured thrilling fight sequences, a banger of a folk ballad about our titular monster-slaying hero, and a non-linear timeline that is occasionally as frustrating as it is fun to unravel. And though things will reportedly become a bit more chronological in the show’s second season, the interconnected stakes have never been higher for our favorite characters. Emotional richness sets The Witcher apart from many of the other big-name…

Doctor Who: Flux – Is the Grand Serpent the Master in Disguise?

New DVD release

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: Flux Episode 5 ‘Survivors of the Flux’ The first Master story my son ever saw was ‘Spyfall’, last year (yes, it was only last year). A bit later we finally began the pilgrimage and watched the entire New Series over the space of eight or nine months. ‘Spyfall’ clearly had an impact, because every time a new character in a suit turned up, he’d immediately point to the screen and tell me “That’s the Master!” So, when a mysterious, arch, obviously evil figure in a dapper black suit shows up and people begin to…

But even as the year that was begins its final 30-day run on your calendar, we cannot deny being happy to see the broader holiday season here, and all the good cheer it brings—including on streaming services. Netflix, for one, is committed to spreading happy tidings, as judged by their glut of new Christmas movies. However, if you’re someone who isn’t looking for more cinematic trifles this December, and rather just want to know about the best non-original film content coming to your living…

The Flash: Armageddon Brings Black Lightning Back to the Arrowverse

New DVD release

This THE FLASH: ARMAGEDDON article contains spoilers. The Flash Season 8 Episode 3 As crossovers go, The Flash’s five-part Armageddon event is pretty low-key, so much so that it’s easy to see why showrunner Eric Wallace doesn’t really like the idea of calling it a crossover at all. And maybe that’s a good thing, in the end, because rather than going for the spectacle of, say, a Crisis on Infinite Earths or Crisis on Earth-X, the show has time to give us quieter, richer character moments of the sort we so rarely get between heroes from different shows.  “Armageddon, Pt. 3” brings…
