Link Tank: All You Need to Know About Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Remake

New DVD release
We’re all a little bit nervous about Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender after how the 2010 film turned out, but so far, everything seems to be pointing in the right direction for the series. “When Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of the greatest animated series of all time, came to Netflix in May of 2020, the people started asking: What’s up with that new live-action series they were talking about? In 2018, Netflix announced that it would be retelling the story of the Gaang with real people, and fans were immediately piqued. They were also a little…

Will Doctor Who: Flux Reset the Whoniverse?

New DVD release
Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: Flux episodes one to three. ‘The new Doctor Who showrunner is destroying continuity!’ Like ‘I don’t like the new theme tune’, ‘When did the show suddenly start having all this progressive politics in it?’, ‘Actually the new theme tune’s growing on me’, ‘Why aren’t the Sontarans scary anymore?’ and ‘I don’t like the new theme tune’, the above doesn’t actually mean anything – it’s just something fans like to say to remind each other that we still exist. Fans were saying it almost since the dawn of the show, and they’ll still be saying…

New DVD release
The following contains spoilers for the Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 premiere Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 1 Star Trek: Discovery has been many things over the course of its run: A grim war story, a nostalgia-fueled prequel, and a journey into a far-flung feature unlike anything the franchise had attempted in the past. Over the course of the show’s 40-ish episodes to date, the crew of the U.S.S. Hanna Season 1 & 2 Recap: Explaining UTRAX, Marissa, the Pioneers and the Hit List

New DVD release
When will shady organisations learn that if they’re going to breed a squadron of teen girl super soldiers, their range of genetic enhancements needs to include an off switch? Yes, teenagers can fly under the assassin radar (as Hanna CIA baddie John Carmichael says, “Who’s really going to suspect an 18-year-old freshman in pigtails of state-sponsored murder?), but rebellion is built in. Brainwashed or not, at some point your murder-optimised darling will turn on you and when she does, you’ll rue the day you made her quite such an efficient killing machine. Hanna, UTRAX, the forest, Erik and Marissa Hanna…

Is Legends of Tomorrow Setting Up a Gideon vs. Gideon Battle?

New DVD release
This Legends of Tomorrow review contains spoilers Legends of Tomorrow Season 7 Episode 6 I’ll admit a part of me is a little surprised at how much was explained this week. We’re very close to the midseason break for Legends of Tomorrow, but I half expected the revelations to dribble out over the course of this episode and the next. But that’s not what happened at all: we got a TON of resolution tonight, with answers to the biggest plot mystery and the biggest character one: what’s the story with the other Waverider, and who is Dr. Gwyn Davies’ “special…

Tom Holland Hints at Spider-Man Exit as Marvel Contract Expires

New DVD release
As the imminent arrival of Spider-Man: No Way Home stokes a fever pitch among fans with its new, multiverse-transcending, villain-stacked trailer, another story—a potentially consequential one—has been subtly playing out behind the scenes about star Tom Holland. With the headliner having already confirmed the threequel as his last contracted appearance, he has been intimating an idea of finality. Indeed, Holland’s latest comments intriguingly push the impression that he’s ready to walk away from his breakthrough role. While Holland is still a young man of 25, he’s been speaking to the press with the drained demeanor of a grizzled veteran who’s…

Hellbound Is Even Scarier Than Train to Busan

Netflix, New DVD release
This Hellbound review is based on the first three episodes of the Netflix series. It contains minor spoilers. We’re all going to die, but most of us don’t know when, how, or what will happen to us (if anything) after the inevitable event. This is a reality we all live with, and that much of modern life under capitalism actively encourages us to ignore. Hellbound, Netflix‘s six-part supernatural horror from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, asks: what happens when we are forced to face that reality, not only on a personal level but a societal one. It’s a particularly…

20 Best PlayStation 3 Games Ever

New DVD release
It’s mostly forgotten now, but the PlayStation 3 actually had an incredibly rocky launch. The console’s architecture initially made it difficult to develop for, early exclusives were underwhelming, and the $599 price tag (roughly $800 in 2021 dollars) for the top end launch model was just too rich for many gamers.  But with time, those issues faded away. The higher price tag, due in part to the then-novel Blu-ray disc drive, just meant games could be larger and more detailed than ever before. Developers quickly adapted to the console, and now the PS3 is just as fondly remembered as any…

Halo Infinite: Best Guns and Weapons

New DVD release
The surprise launch of Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer means that we all get a chance to dive into the game’s first season of competitive play a bit earlier than we thought we would and start to get a feel for what guns and weapons will end up dominating the meta. While I suspect that the Halo Infinite team will be releasing several patches as its first season unfolds (this is a modern multiplayer game), it has to be said that many of the guns in this game are surprisingly well-balanced and allow for a variety of strategies and playstyles. Still, it’s…

Why Riverdale’s Shocking Twist Reinvigorates The Series

New DVD release
This RIVERDALE review contains spoilers Riverdale Season 6 Episode 1 Last season, Riverdale jumped ahead in time to skip over the gang’s college and re-contextualize their relationships with each other. That, meshed with subplots about everything from Mothmen to murderous truckers to Mr. Lodge’s latest (and for now at least, last) criminal scheme, resulted in the most uneven season of the series to date. In short order, the standard weirdness of Riverdale had become rote. Something massive had to change in order for the series to evolve. And so plans were hatched for a five-part season opening event called Rivervale.…

Link Tank: Dragon Ball Is Releasing an Asymmetrical Survival Game

New DVD release
Dragon Ball is releasing a new horror-based video game that looks like the anime version of Dead by Daylight. “Dragon Ball villains Cell, Buu, and Frieza might not be much of a threat to Super Saiyan God Goku With Cheese, but to normal, non-fighting characters they’re downright terrifying. Bandai Namco harnesses that terror in Dragon Ball: The Breakers, an asymmetrical survival game that pits seven non-powered players against one all-powerful anime bad guy.” Read more at Kotaku Where will Kit Harringtons’ character Dane Whitman from Eternals appear next in the MCU? Let’s theorize when we might see him pop up…

That Time Ringo Starr Played Frank Zappa in 200 Motels

New DVD release
With Peter Jackson’s re-cut of The Beatles: Get Back coming at the end of November, we are reminded the Beatles were cinematic stars as well as musical artists. Beyond the group’s films, John Lennon played Private Gripweed in Richard Lester’s How I Won the War, and Ringo Starr acted in quite a few films. His choices were far more in keeping with the underground and independent air of the time. Starr starred with Peter Sellars in the anti-capitalist satire The Magic Christian, as the villain in the Spaghetti Western Blindman, and the voyeuristic Mexican gardener Emmanuel in the sex farce…

How Amazon’s The Wheel of Time Embraces Female-Focused Fantasy

New DVD release
Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series is quite rightly defined as massive. In fact, some have called it unadaptable. The story spans fourteen novels spread over two decades and was ultimately penned by two different authors (Jordan passed away in 2007 and fellow fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson was brought in to finish the series based on his notes.) It was also considered fairly groundbreaking in many ways, from its sprawling cast of major characters to its incorporation of the cyclical nature of creation most often seen in Eastern religions, its focus on balance and duality, and perhaps most importantly,…

The Flash Season 8: Atom, Despero, and More Secrets of Armageddon Revealed

New DVD release
This The Flash: Armageddon article contains spoilers. The Flash Season 8 Episode 1 “This is not a crossover,” showrunner Eric Wallace tells me via Zoom of Armageddon, the five episode event story that kicks off The Flash Season 8. “I cannot stress that enough. This is a five part special event, which means it’s a traditional graphic novel centered around Flash that’s a little bit bigger. A little bit more exciting, a little bit extra, the emotions are a little deeper, but it is not a crossover.” That doesn’t mean that Armageddon isn’t big. It is. Five episodes, six heroes…

Spider-Man: No Way Home – New Trailer Breakdown and Marvel Easter Eggs Analysis

New DVD release
Has there been a more anticipated trailer than this new one for Spider-Man: No Way Home over the last few years? We’re having serious trouble thinking of one. The secrecy surrounding this movie has sent speculation (and some genuine leaks) to a fever pitch almost unheard of in recent times. And both Sony and Marvel Studios have done their level best to lean in to the fan anticipation in every possible way, with teases, secrecy, more teases, outright denial, and a marketing campaign that has left absolutely nothing to chance. But the new (and final) Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer…

Halo Infinite: Best Controller and Sensitivity Settings

New DVD release
If we’ve learned one thing between Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer test flight and the early days of the game’s surprise early multiplayer beta release, it’s that you’re going to want to go into this game with the right settings if you’re going to stand a chance of surviving Infinite‘s chaotic multiplayer modes. Infinite is a throwback to classic Halo multiplayer experiences in many ways, which means that it’s pretty different from a lot of the most popular multiplayer shooters on the market today. As such, you’re really going to want to make sure that you find the right settings that best…

The Expanse Season 6 Trailer Reveals Unlikely Pairings

New DVD release
With The Expanse season 6 being the series’ final run, there isn’t much time to resolve the solar system’s woes, but the journey to whatever resolution the show gives us will be about what the characters everyone loves do with their remaining time on screen. The latest trailer for the series, which begins its final season on December 10th, gives a few hints about what relationships, both supportive and confrontational, will take center stage in the story to come. Some established connections, such as the intimacy between Holden and Naomi, are seen to have been reforged since the circumstances that…

The Game Awards 2021 Nominations: Biggest Snubs and Surprises

New DVD release
The nominees for The Game Awards 2021 have finally been revealed, which means that it’s also finally time to talk about the biggest video game award show of the year’s most notable snubs and surprises. In all seriousness, trying to make a shortlist of the best games of the year is a difficult and often thankless task that becomes even more thankless and difficult when you happen to be responsible for the biggest awards show in a particular medium. This has also been an especially strange year for video games as many notable titles were delayed (or perhaps rushed to…
