Dune: Part Two Greenlit as Studios Back Away from Hybrid Streaming Releases

New DVD release
The spice must flow, and when it does it will look like movie theater popcorn. That appears to be the reasoning at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., with the former breaking the news on Twitter that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is officially greenlit and already has an October 2023 release date! The news comes after Villeneuve’s first Dune picture (or “Dune: Part One” as the title card sneakily revealed in the finished film) became WB’s biggest opening weekend since the COVID-19 pandemic began, grossing $41 million in its first three days. That number, while obviously more muted than other…

The Secrets of the Batman: The Long Halloween Saga

New DVD release
One of the most famous stories in Batman history, Batman: The Long Halloween has just added a new chapter. Out now from DC Comics, Batman: The Long Halloween Special is the next chapter in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s exploration of the early days of the Dark Knight and his villains, following. Gotham City is a familiar playground for Loeb and Sale, having kicked off their tales of Batman’s formative years with a trio of Halloween-themed specials in Legends of the Dark Knight, before the “real-time” month to month holiday-themed Batman: The Long Halloween. That was followed by Batman: Dark…

Marvel’s Ghost Rider TV Series That We Almost Saw

New DVD release
Before Disney incorporated Marvel’s TV offerings into the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella, Marvel storytelling on television was a fascinating mixed bag.  Marvel shows existed siloed off in their own continuities and on different networks like Agents of SHIELD on ABC, Runaways on Hulu, and Daredevil and all his Defender friends on Netflix. Right before the Marvel Television imprint was shuttered in favor of Marvel Entertainment, however, we very nearly got one last creative swing. In a sprawling feature about the history of Marvel Comics character Ghost Rider, ComicBook.com unveils some new details about the now-canceled Agents of SHIELD spinoff featuring…

Tom Holland Reveals New MCU Character in Spider-Man: No Way Home

New DVD release
Despite stirring fans with a debut trailer earlier this month, Spider-Man: No Way Home still seems to have more monumental secrets set to be unleashed before the film’s December arrival. With a multiverse-mired plot now confirmed, theories are rampant over the cadre of returning villains from past iterations and, more notably, the increasing expectation that former big-screen Wall-Crawlers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will join star Tom Holland. Consequently, Holland’s story about a scene has further stoked speculation. While the notoriously loose-lipped Holland has been walking a tightrope narrow enough to even challenge Spidey himself when discussing Spider-Man: No Way…

Where Was Hocus Pocus Filmed?

New DVD release
Anyone who lives not in Los Angeles, New York City, or Vancouver is probably familiar with the uncanny experience of watching an American TV show or movie ostensibly set in your home state or city, but filmed somewhere that is quite obviously not your home state or city. As someone who has lived most of their life in New England, I’ve seen many a film that “takes place” in the region, but that gets some basic stuff hilariously wrong due to the limitations of filming location (I’m looking at you, Gilmore Girls). But what about beloved Halloween classic Hocus Pocus?…

Army of Thieves Review: Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead Universe Gets Second Helpings

Netflix, New DVD release
Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead universe is expanding, and not in all the ways you expect. The first movie, which involved time loops, robots, aliens, and even copulating zombies, unsurprisingly left viewers with lots of questions, but don’t expect this universe’s sophomore outing to deliver any of the answers you’re looking for. Instead, Army of Thieves is a prequel that largely ignores the zombie-infested hell of Las Vegas, and it’s all the better for it. Green lighting a prequel before the first movie had even dropped always seemed a bit presumptuous on Netflix’s part, but the connections between the…

Link Tank: Kristen Stewart Calls Her Career “a Total Crapshoot”

New DVD release
Twilight and Spencer actress Kristen Stewart admits she’s only made a small handful of “good” films. “Ahead of the U.S. debut of her enthralling and Oscar-worthy performance as Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s biopic Spencer, Kristen Stewart is acknowledging the elephant in the room: her career hasn’t really been filled with critically acclaimed features, to say the least. ‘It’s a total crapshoot,’ Stewart says in a recent interview with The Sunday Times. ‘I’ve probably made five really good films, out of 45 or 50 films? Ones that I go, ‘Wow, that person made a top-to-bottom beautiful piece of work!’” Read…

Stath Lets Flats: a Brilliant Sitcom Antidote to Bland Comedy

New DVD release
As you’ll know if you haven’t set your Netflix account to stop autoplaying previews, a lot of comedy writing isn’t really comedy writing at all, but writing in the shape of comedy. There are rhythmic set-ups and punch lines and pauses for laughter, but what’s being said is… words. There’s every appearance of a joke, but nothing inside, just a vacuum where a joke might go. It’s the TV equivalent of void-fill foam starch packing peanuts; technically edible but with zero nutritional value. And then there’s Stath Lets Flats, a comedy so rich in nutrients you could live off it for…

Bruce Campbell on the Concept of Elevated Horror: ‘I Don’t Care About Their Dumb Terms’

New DVD release
Bruce Campbell has been doing cool horror movies before they thought it was cool. And by “they,” we mean the recent spate of social media tastemakers and even some film critics who’ve embraced the horror renaissance of the last decade with the dubious phrase of “elevated horror.” To be sure, the horror genre is having another moment after the 2010s—one in its long history where fascinating and young filmmaking voices use the tools intended to scare an audience in order to make something more visceral or unsettling than just a jump scare. In recent years that’s included new auteurs like…

Inside Marvel’s Secret Battle Plan to Nix The Amazing Spider-Man 3

New DVD release
Just imagine: Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s an idea that fans can now happily take for granted, like Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man or Baby Groot being adorable. But also like those aforementioned concepts, there was a moment when it seemed like a risk—a gamble unlikely to happen until Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige put a lot of thought into it. In fact, we’re still learning just how strong a hand he played in shaping the direction of the Spider-Man franchise at Sony, including when Marvel Studios decided not to continue on with Andrew Garfield as Peter…

Dune: The Sardaukar Are Scarier Than You Realize

New DVD release
This article contains Dune spoilers. At a glance it feels like we’ve seen this song and dance before. An army of white-armored soldiers stand in perfect square formations beneath the comings and goings of Offworld spaceships. They’re soldiers; the supposed elite; the Emperor’s very own Sardaukar hit squad. But to anyone who’s watched a Star Wars movie or nine, they’re not that threatening, right? This supposed scourge off the Empire—excuse me, Imperium—is built up to be unbeatable until our protagonists start mowing them down by the dozen. Well, as it turns out the Sardaukar of Frank Herbert and Denis Villeneuve’s…

Can you believe that Legends of Tomorrow, a show that started off as a home for characters who had completed their arcs on other DC Arrowverse shows, began with a tricky/impenetrable premise, and has since evolved to be one of the weirdest and most unique TV shows around is about to celebrate its 100th episode? Well, we sure can. After all, we’ve been telling everyone who will listen that Legends of Tomorrow is far more than just its superhero TV pedigree and is one of the most delightful hours you can spend in front of a screen each week.  And…

How Kang the Conqueror and He Who Remains Are Different in the MCU

New DVD release
This article contains Loki spoilers. “See you soon.” Those were the last words spoken by He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) as he died from a stab wound at the end of Loki season 1. He Who Remains made it quite clear to Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) that killing him would unleash an infinite number of variants of himself, creating a true Multiverse of Madness. One variant in particular, however, is a force to be feared: Kang the Conqueror. Jonathan Majors will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the mighty Kang in Ant-Man and…

How Star Wars: Ahsoka’s Anakin Return Could Validate Biggest Change to Original Trilogy

New DVD release
The Prequel era is back in full force. Not only will we see the return of Ewan McGregor in next year’s Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series but also Hayden Christensen, either reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker in a flashback/vision or as Darth Vader for a never-before-seen confrontation with his old master. Either way, McGregor and Christensen’s first scene together since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith will be a huge moment on Disney+ in 2022. But Christensen’s Star Wars comeback isn’t stopping there. THR reports that the actor will also appear in the upcoming Ahsoka series opposite Rosario Dawson, although it’s…

Henry Cavill is James Bond in This Intriguing New Deepfake

New DVD release
While Daniel Craig’s celebrated extended occupancy as star of the James Bond franchise has come to a poetic end with the recent release of No Time to Die, conversations about his replacement are rampant. Yet, with the field of candidates being more demographically open than previous vacancies, speculators might overlook the possibility of a more conventional—white and British—Bond, like, say, superstar Henry Cavill. Thus, the arrival of a deepfake video with Cavill swapped in as Bond is opening some eyes.    Deepfake/VFX artist StryderHD has provided a simulation of sorts for a prospective Henry Cavill James Bond tenure with a…

The Wheel of Time: Who Is the Dragon Reborn?

New DVD release
There are no dragons in The Wheel of Time. In fact, most characters in the Robert Jordan novels wouldn’t even be able to tell you what a dragon is. But assuming the mythical creatures went extinct millennia ago provides a sense of the scale for the cyclical history that gives the series its name, and one of the most notable historical figures from the long gone Age of Legends is an ancient hero who named himself the Dragon. The latest trailer finds Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine seeking his reincarnation, the Dragon Reborn. As an Aes Sedai scholar and channeler, Moiraine begins…

The Last Kingdom Netflix Movie Title Calls Back to a Book Prophecy

Netflix, New DVD release
When Carnival Films adapted Death of Kings (the sixth book in Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories series) they – probably wisely – left out a scene in which Uhtred of Bebbanburg is drugged in a witch’s cave and sexually assaulted by a goddess of the earth. Season three had plenty going on without that little adventure. King Alfred was dying, Uhtred was cursed, Danish war lord Bloodhair was doing what Danish war lords do and vowing to make the streets run with Saxon blood… Add in seer Skade running around the place stabbing priests and the last thing required was the…

Succession Season 3: Logan’s Box of Donuts Steal the Show

New DVD release
This article contains spoilers for Succession season 3 episode 2. The Roy siblings of Succession may not have known the details, but they knew the men involved in the Waystar cruise line scandal, and that makes them culpable. However, making that point with sincerity and without clever put-downs or cheeky irony was bound to go over as well as a free steak dinner at a vegan lifestyle convention. Sparks fly every time the Roy children get in a room due to a palpable sense of competition, but also the unspoken feeling that only they know what it’s like to grow…

He’s seeking another AI, code-named ‘The Weapon,’ who was allegedly designed as a countermeasure to Cortana.
