And I like to be able to say no. And that’s it.That’s not probably a politically correct thing to do. However, too bad. I’m still here 50 years later.” McDowell is talking to us from LA, his accent a soft mix of Yorkshire, where he grew up,…

The Many Saints of Newark: Undercover Cop Talks About Infiltrating The Real Sopranos

New DVD release

The Many Saints of Newark has once again brought the crime family at the center of The Sopranos into the spotlight. But Giovanni Rocco had eyes on them for years. Under the alias of “Giovanni Gatto,” the New Jersey police officer was at the center of Operation Charlie Horse, a federal undercover task force that busted a boss and nine crewmembers of New Jersey’s DeCavalcante family, which The Sopranos’ DiMeo family is based on. Giovanni’s Ring: My Life Inside the Real Sopranos, co-written with Douglas Schofield, tells the inside story. The DeCavalcante family is much more historically embedded in the…

Venom 2 Box Office Shatters Franchise and COVID Records

New DVD release

It would seem reports of movie theaters’ demise were greatly exaggerated. That seemed obvious last month when Shang-Chi performed beyond expectations and earned $94.7 million over a four-day holiday weekend. Yet it seems even more clear now since Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the follow-up to Tom Hardy’s madcap 2018 superhero movie, blasted past the box office records set by its predecessor, as well as every other film to open in a traditional three-day window since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Grossing an estimated $90.1 million this weekend, Venom 2’s box office is a major win for Sony Pictures as well as…

The Many Saints of Newark’s Billy Magnussen On How He Found His Paulie Walnuts

New DVD release

It’s hard to walk in an old gangster’s shoes, even if they are patent leather, but it helps if you have the OG’s custom tailored, classic wide collar mustard-yellow coat. Front-buttoned, with wool blend material, soft inner viscose lining, long sleeves, and open hem cuffs, it is stylish and smart, though not blood resistant. Billy Magnussen is too young for gray wingtips in his hair, but he’s just the right age to flip from one mob player to another. In The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel to David Chase’s influential TV series The Sopranos, Magnussen plays a young Paulie…

DC Horror Brings New Blood to the Genre

New DVD release

Comics are Katie Kubert’s professional medium, but it’s the other kind of medium that’s perhaps as equally relevant to her current role as editor of the new DC Horror imprint.   As a child, Kubert recalls visiting the Tower of London with her family when, after a brief visit, her mother said, “I don’t want to be here anymore.”  You see, Kubert’s mom sees dead people. And, according to her daughter, she’s really good at it. So good she must have seen something at the historic landmark that unsettled her. So good she can even read a situation over the phone,…

The Many Saints of Newark Ending Explained

New DVD release

This article contains spoilers for The Many Saints of Newark. In some of the spookiest words ever spoken on The Sopranos, the usually genial and optimistic Bobby “Bacala” Baccalieri Jr. wonders aloud what being killed would be like.  “You probably don’t even hear it when it happens, right?” Bobby asks his boss Tony Soprano as they glide down a lazy river in a dinghy.  Well, depending on your interpretation of The Sopranos’ final moments, Bobby was right. You don’t even hear it when it happens. In fact, you don’t see, smell, feel, or taste it.  Now that David Chase’s long-awaited…

The Many Saints of Newark Is a Trashy Gangster B-Movie, There’s Nothing Wrong with That

New DVD release

When I first walked out of The Many Saints of Newark, my initial reaction was to call it a B-movie. What I didn’t say at the time, however, was how much I love B-movies. While I saw the flaws in the film and couldn’t wholly endorse it to cinemagoers spoiled by the perfection of The Godfather, Goodfellas, and New Jack City, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to people like me. Those who appreciate the low-budget gangster movies sometimes because of their warts. A majority of fans of The Sopranos will have the same reaction: Meh, The Many Saints of Newark…

Edgar Wiggins is a Soul Plumber, and the hero of the new DC Horror title of the same name, created by The Last Podcast on the Left trio of Ben Kissel, Marcus Parks, and Henry Zebrowski. The enormously successful podcast, now available exclusively on Spotify, combines comedy and high strangeness for deep dives into the paranormal, ufology, dark history, and true crime. And with Soul Plumber, the deep dives continue by — as Zebrowski describes him — a tolerant and pure-hearted “wet Chihuahua” of a man driven by a sincere belief in a loving God, but is just too weird…

How The Walking Dead is Setting Up its Own King Joffrey

New DVD release

The Walking Dead has served its share of infuriatingly repugnant characters across its eleven long years on AMC. Indeed, the show’s devoted audience is quite accustomed to seeing insufferable asshats torment and/or kill beloved characters, creating an empty, sour return on emotional investment. Robert Kirkman’s source material comic book indicates that the most infuriating of them all, Sebastian Milton, has yet to appear on the show. However, that merciful moratorium ends with his debut in this week’s episode. Yet, the prospect of collectively raised blood pressure might prove to be a good thing for the series as it heads to…

Metal Gear Solid Remake Rumors Breathe Life into Konami, Even as eFootball Dies

New DVD release

In the last decade, Japanese publisher Konami has largely moved away from AAA video game publishing in order to focus its development arm on its much more profitable pachinko machines. It’s been an unfortunate pivot for fans of Konami’s games, to say the least, since the publisher happens to be sitting on some of the most highly-regarded gaming franchises of all-time. Among Konami’s biggest properties are Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Castlevania, most of which have spent years collecting dust in the publisher’s vaults except for the odd remastered collection or…themed pachinko machine. 2018’s Metal Gear Survive, a massive…

No, the former Tommy DeVito isn’t in the credits, and he doesn’t bring his shine box. He is slipped in like contraband at a federal penitentiary. Venom 2: How Tom Hardy Convinced Andy Serkis to Direct The Sequel

New DVD release

Andy Serkis knows his way around giving great performances via both motion capture and CG. So the idea of him directing Venom: Let There Be Carnage—the new follow-up to 2018’s Venom, which introduced Tom Hardy as both popular Marvel Comics character Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote that infests him—seems like a no-brainer on paper. After all, this is the man whose groundbreaking work as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy showed just how far a digital character could go, even 20 years ago, in range and emotion with a human actor underneath the computerized costume.…
