The Wheel of Time: Who Are the Aes Sedai?

New DVD release
The Wheel of Time is difficult to define, but in simplified terms the story follows a cycle of history that repeats: one in which a hero called the Dragon is reborn into each turn of the wheel to defeat the Shadow. But the light the Dragon Reborn brings is earned through much hardship, and the only guiding force through this peace by the sword are the Aes Sedai, the women who harness elemental forces and use their magic to influence the pattern of the prophecy as it unfolds. So while The Wheel of Time is not exactly about the Aes…

Nintendo Switch OLED Comparison Showcases the Big and Small Differences

New DVD release
A series of recent Nintendo Switch OLED previews, and at least one incredibly unofficial Switch OLED unboxing/comparison video, have finally given us a better look at the biggest (and smallest) differences between the upcoming $349 device and the base Nintendo Switch model. So is the Nintendo Switch OLED worth that investment? That really depends on your situation, preferences, and expectations. To the shock of absolutely nobody who has been following the Switch OLED so far, the biggest difference between the upgraded console and the base Switch is indeed the OLED’s 7-inch screen. Not only is that a welcome size increase…

Why Are Squid Game’s English-Language Actors So Bad?

Netflix, New DVD release
Squid Game is a superb series, impressively executed from start to finish. Its assets include its stellar cast, filled with veteran actors and newcomers alike delivering moving, complex performances. Sadly, the deep bench that is the Squid Game ensemble does not apply to the crew of English-language actors, who come in to fill the various VIP roles in Episode 7 with all the nuance of a high school quarterback bombing an audition for the spring production. Why are the English-language actors in Squid Game so bad? You can probably already have some guesses, but I’m going to break it down…

Best Squid Game Doll Sightings

Netflix, New DVD release
Squid Game has some amazing production design, and some of it will live on long past the Netflix series. When it comes to props, the giant Red Light, Green Light doll, which has an iconic (and horrifying) role in the Netflix series opening episode, may be the standout. A video of the Mugunghwa doll (named for Mugunghwa Blooms, which is what Korean call Red Light, Green Light) dancing to various songs is currently being shared around Twitter and other social platforms. I have to admit… watching them is strangely addicting. the doll in squid game vibing to loco by itzy#ITZY #LOCO #있지…

Doctor Who: What Does the Second Coming of Russell T. Davies Mean For the Show?

New DVD release
It was announced last week that Russell T. Davies is returning to show run Doctor Who for the show’s 60th anniversary series and beyond. If that’s news to you, I refer you to my previous sentence. All the information is there. After a weekend to absorb the news and read takes of various temperatures, there’s still plenty to be positive about. There are potential negatives though, so let’s examine these first. It’s true that Russell T. Davies burnt himself out at the end of his initial run (2005 – 2010), and felt there was nothing more he could do on…

The Sopranos’ Best End Credit Songs

New DVD release
There are so many legendary aspects of The Sopranos that it’s hard to pick just one. Between masterful storytelling, deep character development, and uncanny acting, everything comes together to create a show that has been enjoyed for over two decades now. The most artistic aspect of the package, however, may just be the use of music, specifically the unique songs curated personally by creator David Chase that run during each episode’s end credits.  Ranging from oldies, foreign ballads, jazz compositions, and pure instrumentals, the variety is stunning and can keep you exploring the track list of the series for days.…

Venom: Let There Be Carnage – The Comics History of the Symbiote Rivalry

New DVD release
Something that impresses me with a superhero movie like Venom is when it doesn’t rush directly into the expected villain. When there are four different Fantastic Four movies, and they’re all about emphasizing Dr. Doom, it’s a breath of fresh air when, say, Man of Steel only makes an Easter egg reference to Lex Luthor instead of going directly for that confrontation. The MCU Spider-Man has yet to meet an Osborn, guys like Thanos and Darkseid started out as ominous benefactors, and the existence of Heath Ledger Joker was merely a cliffhanger tease in Batman Begins. Much like how the…

Midnight Mass: Where is Crockett Island?

Netflix, New DVD release
This article contains light spoilers for Midnight Mass. As far as vacation spots go, Crockett Island on Netflix’s Midnight Mass doesn’t seem to be a bad choice. The weather is chilly, but a nice cable-knit sweater will take care of that. There are also plenty of feral kitties to attempt to pet. Best of all, the community of 127 people knows how to throw a mean potluck…or “Crock Pot Luck” as they like to call it. If it weren’t for the, you know … creature, Crockett Island would be a fun trip. So when can we all go visit it? …

James Bond Producers on the Next 007: “We’re not thinking about it at all”

New DVD release
The delayed release of No Time to Die, at long last, inches ever so closely. Yet, it’s understandable that fans of the James Bond franchise find themselves looking beyond the film, since it serves as Daniel Craig’s long-signaled cinematic swan song. Indeed, even before Craig sips his last onscreen shaken-not-stirred martini, speculation over his replacement has already snowballed to the point where it arguably overshadows the film itself. Thusly, the stewards of the franchise confirm that there is no rush to even start that inevitable casting process. The highly-anticipated decision centering on who will ultimately portray MGM’s seventh officially canonical…

Metroid Dread Looks to Prove 2D Horror Games Can Be Scary

New DVD release
The latest Metroid Dread previews include quite a few (mostly positive) words about the highly-anticipated upcoming Switch game, but the one word that’s jumping out at everyone at the moment is “scary.” Granted, the Metroid franchise has always utilized horror elements (its revolutionary atmosphere can partially be attributed to the various ways it was influenced by the Alien films), but with a few possible exceptions (most notably the SA-X sequences from Metroid Fusion), it’s tough to say that the Metroid franchise has ever been especially frightening. Creepy, perhaps, but not really that more traditional kind of scary that makes you…

The Last of Us TV Show Set Photo Finally Reveals the New Joel and Ellie

New DVD release
For many fans, Joel and Ellie are characters that defined an entire generation of gaming when The Last of Us hit the PlayStation 3 in 2013 and ushered in a new era of video game storytelling. In many ways, their relationship, and the journey they embark on to cure a deadly virus that’s destroyed the planet, inspired the entire industry to rethink the kind of character work and narratives that could be achieved in the medium. Some critics even (unfairly) argued that Joel and Ellie’s adventure was a clear sign that video games had matured and could now aim for…

Link Tank: Should James McAvoy Play a Young Captain Picard?

New DVD release
James McAvoy has already nailed playing a younger version of one of Patrick Stewart’s characters, so why not tackle Jean-Luc Picard next? “Yeah, definitely. I’ve successfully been Patrick, actually, and balded up, although maybe again, the young Jean-Luc wouldn’t be bald. But yeah, no, maybe I’m overqualified for it, though. That’s the other thing. Do you know what I mean? It’s too easy, it’s too obvious a choice. So maybe that turns people off from it.” Read more at Collider Release the Taylor Cut? How The Sopranos Changed TV Analysis Forever

New DVD release
When The Sopranos first aired over 20 years ago, audiences had never before seen that type of complex storytelling on the small screen. The program was acclaimed for its otherworldly acting and intricate attention to detail, but there were individuals outside of the Sopranos set that helped audiences understand a show that was much more dense and rich than anything that had ever come before it. Without widespread Internet access and with social media not even a mere thought in anybody’s imagination, it was up to pioneering TV analysts to make sense of this new type of prestige television that…

The Walking Dead Season 11: Who Is Virgil?

New DVD release
This Walking Dead article contains spoilers. Near the end of The Walking Dead season 11 episode 6, Virgil (Kevin Carroll) takes in the sight of some feral human beings and remarks “I’ve never seen someone this far gone.” Given that these haunted house ghouls are completely inhuman, it’s a perfectly fair statement to make. It’s also a bit ironic coming from Virgil, Connie’s (Lauren Ridloff) new travel partner and previously one of the most “far gone” characters introduced on The Walking Dead. Kevin Carroll’s character Virgil, was previously introduced in the season 10 mid-season finale, “The World Before.” He would…

Bruce Campbell and 40 Years of Building The Evil Dead Myth

New DVD release
This article is presented by: When The Evil Dead returns to theaters nationwide on Oct. 7 as an exclusive one-night only Fathom event, complete with a Bruce Campbell introduction, it will be almost 40 years to the day since the film premiered at Detroit’s Redford Theatre, an ancient movie palace that even now maintains a classic theater organ in the back. During that 1981 debut, the movie was still titled “The Book of the Dead,” and Sam Raimi was renting ambulances to place outside the cinema in order to set a mood. There was a line out the door. Few…

The Secrets That Lurk in The Last House on Needless Street

New DVD release
This article is sponsored by Catriona Ward’s latest novel, The Last House on Needless Street, is the sort of book that defies easy description and categorization. Part horror story, part mystery thriller, and part tragedy, the book subverts a lot of expectations about what a genre story should be and do, unpacking a complex emotional narrative in the midst of a menacing tale of fear, uncertainty, and constantly escalating dread. “I’m not sure where it sits,” Ward admits with a laugh during a lengthy conversation with Den of Geek. “It’s a bit un-shelvable.” To be fair, it was probably always…
