Russell Crowe’s Unhinged Wants to Break Quarantine in Movie Theaters

Ever heard the story of the canary in the coal mine? Well, who knew that bird sounded like Russell Crowe screaming out of the side of his driver’s seat? For that’s exactly what you’ll hear when Crowe’s new thriller Unhinged becomes the first movie to open in wide theatrical release since the weekend of March 13. Indeed, Solstice Studios broke the news (via Deadline) Tuesday that they’re moving Unhinged, a movie about road rage gone primal, from its intended September release window to the Fourth of July weekend. Suddenly a relatively small scale indie in which Crowe pulls a Duel…

Hamilton to Premiere on Disney+ in July

Your July calendar has just been filled. Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda announced today that the filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton will be premiering on Disney+ on July 3rd. Yes, that is just in time for American Independence Day. And, yes, this is the only acceptable way to celebrate the holiday this year. Disney is “fast-tracking” the premiere, which was scheduled to be a theatrical release in October 2021. No doubt the “social distancing” measures brought about by the global COVID-19 pandemic has changed the original plan, as it has done for so many things. It’s nice…

How Josh Trank and Tom Hardy Brought Capone to Life

Capone is the last movie you’d ever brand as a “traditional gangster pic.” While the infamous mobster’s seven-year reign of terror as head of the Chicago rackets in the 1920s has been chronicled in movies like The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967) and The Untouchables (1987), the final stages of Capone’s life — addled by dementia and neurosyphilis at his Palm Island, Florida estate after his release from prison — have been explored less than his earlier, more colorful exploits. Enter Josh Trank. After bursting onto the Hollywood radar in 2012 with his found-footage deconstruction of superhero and comic book…

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Popeye Movie Back in the Works

King Features, who hold the rights to Popeye, have brought back Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars creator Genndy Tartakovsky to work on a new animated Popeye movie, five years after he abandoned his first attempt to develop a big budget project for the character over at Sony Pictures Animation. Animation Magazine first reported news of the revived feature. Tartakovsky was originally linked to a Popeye film with Sony back in 2012, but by 2015 he’d left it behind in the midst of creative differences with the studio. “I just wanted him to be Popeye. It’s a…

It took ages to bring the first Deadpool movie to the screen, but the blood, sweat and tears of everyone involved really paid off. This Star Wars article contains spoilers. Rey has big shoes to fill. As the hero of the Sequel Trilogy, she’s inevitably compared to Luke Skywalker’s coming-of-age allegory and Anakin Skywalker’s tragic fall. Not only is she the Jedi destined to save the galaxy, but she’s also a part of a lineage of heroes and villains that define the Star Wars saga. Like Luke, Rey wants to know more about her parents but uncovers a dark secret about her family in the process. Like Anakin, Rey suffers the loss of that family. And in the true Star Wars hero mold, she’s the one…

Capone Review: Tom Hardy Misfires

There’s a cathedral on Chicago’s North Side that I liked visiting as a kid. In its cornerstone, a bullet hole still lingers nearly a century after it shattered the rock: a leaden forget-me-not of the day Al Capone’s gunmen executed Earl “Hymie” Weiss on the church steps. Growing up, it was like communing with a mythological past. But then the less you know about wiseguys and gangsters, the grander they can appear. The real Al Capone was obviously not a mythic figure or a comic book supervillain; he was a thug with a gun and a big mouth who died…

Val Kilmer on Ditching Batman After One Movie: “There Is No Batman”

Val Kilmer has addressed the circumstances that led to him leaving the role of Batman behind after just one movie. In a huge new interview with the New York Times, the actor says he had an epiphany on the set of Joel Schumacher’s 1995 Dark Knight effort, Batman Forever, when billionaire Warren Buffett visited the set with his grandchildren. According to Kilmer, he kindly waited to meet Buffett’s kids as he was told they wanted to see Batman, but when they arrived to find a Batsuited Kilmer ready to engage with them, they snubbed him for the Batmobile and various…

Awesome Moms of Science Fiction and Fantasy

Fantasy tends to be a genre of dead mothers and wicked stepmothers. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise since modern stories often draw on generations of fairy tales and retellings with absent moms. Yet when the mothers are part of the story, they frequently function solely in their parental role, without an indication of their own personhood beyond that. So for Mother’s Day, I wanted to create a list of some of science fiction and fantasy’s (SFF) amazing moms. We may not get to see the lives of these moms on screen or on the page, but we’ve got the…

Revival: New Stephen King Movie to Be Adapted by Doctor Sleep Director

Mike Flanagan, the horror auteur behind The Haunting of Hill House and last year’s theatrical version of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep, is attached to yet another King property: the 2014 novel Revival. Deadline reports that Flanagan will write an adaptation of the novel for Warner Bros. Pictures “with an option to direct,” so he’s not confirmed yet to do the latter. Flanagan is also going to produce the project along with his regular producing partner, Trevor Macy, through their Intrepid Pictures banner. Revival has been acclaimed as one of King’s better recent novels, and at 405 pages, one of his…

Batman Movie Streaming Guide: Where to Watch Online

In a world where things feel like they’re spinning out of control and everything is chaos, it can be quite comforting to watch Bruce Wayne put on a rubber suit and punch bad guys in the face. It’s why Batman movies have been a staple of the moviegoing diet for more than 30 years. That doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon, and even with The Batman’s film production currently delayed, there’s already a richly diverse cinematic legacy of Dark Knight content to choose from: serious dramatic movies, campy comedy movies, animated adventures, and bleak live-action team-ups, to name but…

Scream 5: Neve Campbell Confirms She’s in Talks to Return

The Scream franchise’s leading lady has revealed that she’s hoping to return for the fifth instalment. The new ‘reboot’ was announced in March, with THR noting that Ready or Not directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were attached to the project. Campbell has inhabited the lead role of Sidney Prescott in all four of the late Wes Craven‘s Scream movies. The original 1996 movie saw the character hunted by a masked figure – Ghostface – as she dealt with lingering family trauma in a high school setting that she was increasingly out of touch with, and in 2011, it looked…

Bright Sequel Taps Incredible Hulk Director Louis Leterrier

Bright, the 2017 fantasy thriller headlined by superstar Will Smith, had a distribution strategy that now—about three short years later in the midst of a pandemic—proved bellwether in hindsight. That’s because the project that was tailor-made to be a big screen blockbuster bypassed a theatrical release to premiere as an exclusive streaming offering on Netflix. While the film had its obstacles with critics (our own review was no exception), the streaming giant quickly greenlit a sequel, which is now moving forward with a director. Louis Leterrier is in talks to occupy the director’s chair for the untitled Bright sequel, according…

Disney Looks at a Future Beyond Coronavirus and Possibly Theaters?

The movie industry is a little bit edgy these days. That’s understandable since theaters throughout North America and Europe remain closed during the coronavirus pandemic, which shows no serious signs of abating. Yet the current tension boiling over has existed for years. As movie audiences continue to embrace streaming and direct-to-consumer content, movie studios and exhibitors have sometimes been at odds on how to respond. And if Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s earnings call this week is anything to go by, that tension is only going to heighten. “We very much believe in the value of the theatrical experience,” Chapek told…
