Henry Cavill Reportedly Returning as Superman in New DCEU Movie

Production may have pretty much ground to a halt in the industry but there is a LOT going on behind the scenes in Hollywood right now, as studios are forced to slow down and reflect on past decisions and future prospects. Consequently, WarnerMedia seems to be feeling a lot more romantic about the old DCEU than it was just a few months ago. Not only are we getting the near-mythical Justice League Snyder Cut via streaming on HBO Max, there’s a distinct possibility that David Ayer might get to turn in his own version of Suicide Squad at some point in the future, and now it looks like Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman in a new DCEU movie, too.

A new report out of Deadline claims that Cavill is in talks to don the Superman cape again in a future comic book film for Warner Bros. The British actor had seemingly been pushed aside after he couldn’t be wrangled for a cameo in David F. Sandberg’s warmly received 2019 DC effort Shazam!, and last year the studio was rumored to be in favor of recasting The Last Son of Krypton completely.

Deadline notes that Cavill’s return as Superman won’t be for a Man of Steel sequel, though, and the chances of him filming anything for now-completed DC projects like Wonder Woman 1984, The Batman or The Suicide Squad are incredibly unlikely, but he “could make a cameo” in Shazam 2, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam or Aquaman 2, and despite protestations that reshoots for Snyder’s Justice League cut aren’t on the agenda, some fans are wondering if Cavill would be keen to make time for it anyway, after he went out of his way to be present for the director’s announcement.

Cavill was never officially out as Superman, unlike Ben Affleck, who publicly stepped down from his DCEU role as Batman in the early months of 2019. Despite an industry source telling THR in 2018 that “Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors”, Warner Bros quickly put out a statement at the time that read “We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films” and Cavill’s manager Dany Garcia also reassured fans on Twitter that “the cape is still in his closet.”

Cavill certainly hasn’t been off the radar since he last appeared as Superman in 2017’s shambolic Justice League – he next chose a villainous role as August Walker in Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and signed up for Netflix’s pricey The Witcher adaptation. He’ll also appear as Sherlock Holmes alongside Millie Bobby Brown in Enola Holmes later this year.

Arguably, Cavill is just as perfect for Superman as he ever was, and it’s likely most DCEU fans would embrace the possibility of him returning for future movies. It makes a hell of a lot of sense to try and keep him on at this stage, regardless.

We’ll bring you more on this as it develops.
