It’s been a strange mercurial year, which is now being capped off by a strange and mercurial Oscars season. Last year, the Academy Awards saw its lowest ratings ever due in large part to the paucity of new films that a large global audience would recognize. After all, most major releases moved out of 2020 and into 2021!
But a year later, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues to inhabit its own Twilight Zone. The movies are back, but this will mark the first telecast where eight of the categories—including major ones like Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and more—will not be shown during the broadcasted portion of the ceremony. Rather those categories are being (rather unceremoniously) read off in the first hour ahead of the broadcast to be spliced into the margins later.
This year will also mark the first year of the Oscars’ dubious #OscarsFanFavorite category where Twitter users get to select their favorite movie of the year for some type of award recognition that remains nebulous.
Additionally, the race for several major categories, including Best Picture and Best Actress, haven’t seemed this competitive in decades. While each category has their frontrunners—Netflix’s The Power of the Dog and Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, respectively—neither seems untenable with multiple contenders and dark horses waiting in the wings.
So it should be a unique and hopefully exciting Oscars. And we’ll be here updating this article live as the winners are announced. So if you just want to keep up with the biggest wins, and biggest upsets, scroll on down!
