The Crown Season 4: November Release Date and First Teaser

‘Something as important as the monarchy simply cannot be allowed to fail’ says Queen Elizabeth II in the first teaser for The Crown season four. Very good, ma’am.

That must have been Netflix’s argument to series creator Peter Morgan when he shrunk plans for a total of six seasons down to five, before being persuaded to return to the original number. Something as important and investment-heavy as The Crown also simply cannot be allowed to fail.

HRH’s words gain additional weight in the teaser from being delivered in voiceover as she rides out on horseback in full ceremonial garb, complete with a natty fur hat and mounted guard. Frankly, who’d argue?

Take a look here:

As confirmed in the video, the new season will arrive on Netflix on the 15th of November, following the previous Sunday release strategy. (Sunday’s clearly a good bet – devotees will reach for the remote the moment they wake and make the whole ten hours a royal pyjama party. Remember, showers are for the weak.)

Olivia Colman’s isn’t the only arresting look in this teaser, which also delivers a glimpse of Gillian Anderson as UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher (mostly chin and hairdo, but it’s enough to send a shiver down spines all over the UK for those having to think long and hard about their teenage crush on Dana Scully).

On top of that is the introduction of newcomer Emma Corrin as Lady Diana Spencer, soon-to-be wife of Prince Charles, first in line to the throne. It closes with a shot of the imposing train from Diana’s wedding dress, an image heavy with foreboding that, if UK republicans watched The Crown, would no doubt prompt them to dust off their old ‘Don’t do it, Di’ badges.

The news was announced last weekend that Pennyworth’s Emma Corrin will be replaced as Princess Diana in the final two seasons by Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki, (The Night Manager). Joining Debicki in the seasons five and six cast will be Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret and Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip. Who’ll be taking on the central role of Prince Charles has yet to be announced.

The Crown season four arrives on Netflix on Sunday the 15th of November.
