Thor: Love and Thunder Release Date, Cast, and Story Details

While Captain America and Iron Man saw their stories brought to a close in Avengers: Endgame, there seemed to be plenty of opportunities for new stories with the God of Thunder, and Marvel Studios will take full advantage of it, tapping Taika Waititi, who shaped the delightful Thor: Ragnarok, to make Thor 4 a reality.

Waititi had been set to direct a live action adaptation of Akira for Warner Bros, but after that project was put on hold indefinitely because of “script development concerns” (via THR) he found room in his schedule for Thor 4.

So, when will the gang be back in business? Natalie Portman, who will return to the main cast as Jane Foster alongside Chris Hemsworth in the fourquel (perfectly cromulent word) said very recently that filming will get underway in Australia at the beginning of 2021. This was in the same week that Waititi explained where he was with the script for the Marvel blockbuster.

“I think it’s going really good,” he told BBC News. “We’ve been writing the script off and on for over a year and… actually, this week, doing another pass on it.” He went on to describe the screenplay as “so insane” and “also very romantic.” Waititi noted that romance hasn’t really been in his wheelhouse to date, something that he intends to change with Thor 4‘s story: “I want to make something that I’ve never done or never cared for. I would like to attack something like that.”

Word that Thor: Love and Thunder was being given the go-ahead originally came as something of a surprise just a few days before Marvel’s big Hall H panel at SDCC 2019. Marvel’s Phase Four slate, long shrouded in mystery, was also revealed at the big show, with casts revealed for projects like Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and more. But Thor: Love and Thunder makes the “strongest Avenger” the first of Marvel’s solo heroes to get a fourth film all to himself.

Everything else you need to know is right here…

Thor 4 Release Date

Thor: Love and Thunder was scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 5, 2021, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, its release date has changed to Feb. 11, 2022. You can check out Marvel’s release schedule right here.

Thor 4 Cast

Chris Hemsworth, of course, is returning as Thor, while Tessa Thompson is back as Valkyrie. Waititi supports Thompson’s keenness to play Valkyrie as explicitly queer in Thor 4, though he admits that ultimately it’s not up to him.

“I think so. The IP is not mine,” he told Variety. “But with the actors, I feel whatever makes them comfortable — whether they feel like there’s a natural choice, or a natural way for that character to go — then I’m pretty supportive. If Tessa wanted to do that, I’m in.”

Natalie Portman is also returning as Jane Foster, who is now Thor! Yes, this movie is taking inspiration from Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor comic! We wrote much more about what it means for Jane Foster to carry the hammer of Thor right here. Don’t let anyone fool you, there’s plenty of other precedent for other people, specifically women, to wield Mjolnir, straight from the pages of Marvel Comics.

Jane’s arc might not be comics-accurate when it plays out on the big screen, with Waititi saying “we don’t know” if the character will have cancer.

“That comics run was a big inspiration, and was an influence on the first few drafts. But at Marvel, we always change everything. I could say one thing right now, and in two years, it will be the complete opposite — or that thing won’t exist. We continue writing even in post-production.”

The ALSO BIG NEWS is that Christian Bale is likely going to have a significant role in Thor: Love and Thunder. We have absolutely no idea who he’s playing, but that didn’t stop us from speculating wildly about who it might be.

As teased in the final moments of of Avengers: Endgame, a few of the Guardians of the Galaxy crew will pop up for a spell in Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder, as confirmed by the voice of Groot himself, Vin Diesel.

“I am waiting and excited for my friend James Gunn to knock this next one out of the park,” Diesel told ComicBook. “He took The Suicide Squad so he’s about to embark on it. Thor will also, the director talked to me about Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy. That’ll be very interesting, nobody knows, maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.”

Cat’s out of the bag now, Vin, sorry.

Thor 4 Details

Via Variety, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has joined Taika Waititi on the writing staff. Robinson is perhaps still best known for creating the massively underrated rape-revenge series Sweet/Vicious for MTV, which was canceled in 2017 to general uproar from fans after just one season. More recently, she wrote and directed the Netflix feature film Someone Great starring Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise.

We’ll update this as more information becomes available.
