The Richard Eyre-directed adaptation of Shakespeare’s play is set in a totalitarian present-day England where King Lear (Anthony Hopkins) decides to divide his kingdom based on how much his daughters Goneril (Emma Thompson), Regan (Emily Watson) and Cordelia (Florence Pugh) flatter him. Lear’s Prime Minister, the Earl of Gloucester (Jim Broadbent), has his own problems when his illegitimate son Edmund (John Macmillan) plots against his other son, Edgar (Andrew Scott).
