The Beatles: Made on Merseyside

Recommended Back in DVD's glory days, when stores were overflowing with them, you would often have to watch out for so-called "music" discs that were actually not authorized by the artists and didn't include any music from them- instead just containing interviews of anyone remotely associated that they could find. Many of these discs were about the Beatles- in fact some of the very first budget titles out were "Alf Bicknell's Beatles Diary" and "Beatles Celebration". Today the supply of discs in stores is not as plentiful, but a few of these titles still make it out. Checking out "Made…

Gunsmoke: The Complete Nineteenth Season

Highly Recommended (Note: Reviews of Gunsmoke: The Eighteenth Season and Gunsmoke: The Nineteenth Season are identical. In preparing them I watched at episodes and the extras from both sets.)Nearing home plate, CBS/Paramount's Eighteenth and Nineteenth of 20 season sets of Gunsmoke (1955-1975) nearly finishes off the classic series. Many wondered if the label would complete the series before the DVD format went kaput, so their determination to see it through deserves our gratitude. I've been reviewing Gunsmoke sets since the First Season was released in July 2007. The program was so prolific, upwards of 40 episodes per season in its…

In the Heights, Scoob!, and More Delayed Indefinitely

After a week of speculation about its upcoming spring and early summer release schedule, Warner Bros. is finally making waves due to the coronavirus crisis. The biggest release date shift was that Wonder Woman 1984 is moving off its June 5 release date in favor of Aug. 14, 2020. However, just as important were the announced delays of WB’s animated Scooby-Doo movie, Scoob!, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, and James Wan’s Malignant. All three movies are now indefinitely tabled after moving off their respective launch dates of May 15, June 26, and Aug. 14. And while Wonder Woman 1984 has…

Wonder Woman 1984 Delayed Due to Coronavirus

Wonder Woman’s immense Amazonian ferocity would, on any given day, stop the machinations of just about any supervillain, but it appears that her highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe sequel movie will capitulate—temporarily, anyway—to the global pandemic that has impacted civilization as we know it. In a move that was expected as the overwhelming outbreak of the coronavirus exponentially increases and theaters remain widely shuttered, Warner Bros. has officially delayed the release of sequel Wonder Woman 1984 from its June 5 release date in North America, shifting back to a new release date, August 14. As Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chairman…

Complete Pixar Movie Disney Plus UK Streaming Guide

When Disney+ launched in the US last November, it was still shaking off the remnants of its former Netflix deal. Lingering ties to the streaming competitor meant that a few completist-irking gaps were left in the US Disney+ Pixar catalogue. At launch, Coco, Up and Incredibles 2 weren’t available to American subscribers. Not so for the UK. When Disney+ arrives on March 24th, it’s getting the full complement of Pixar. Films, shorts, you name it. That catalogue is fuller than Emile the Rat in a binful of tainted Camembert. Don’t miss out on this Disney+ PRE-ORDER DEAL, on us! So if you’re…

Miss Fisher’s Distinctive Brand of Superheroism

When Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries launched in 2012, the period murder mystery show wasn’t necessarily looking for an international audience, let alone one as massive and dedicated as it would find. An Australian TV series based on a series of historical mysteries by Australian author Kerry Greenwood, the Miss Fisher TV show blew up in the United States when it became available on Netflix in September 2014 (it left Netflix in 2019, and is now available in its entirety on Acorn TV). Six years later, the franchise debuts its first feature feature film, Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears,…

New Movies 2020: This Year’s Upcoming Must See Releases

To say there has been volatility around the 2020 movie release calendar is an understatement. As justifiable anxiety and caution around the coronavirus pandemic grows, a number of intriguing films scheduled for March, April, and May have been delayed to dates unseen (or into 2021). Many others, meanwhile, have been moved to VOD as our definition of what a “new release is” changes. Be that as it may, February was an unusually strong beginning to the cinematic year, and assuming the rest of the calendar holds, there is plenty still to look forward to–including Mulan and A Quiet Place Part…

How Brittany Snow and Sam Richardson Found Rom-Com Chemistry in Hooking Up

The last place you’d expect to find a meet-cute is in the hallway between a sex addiction support group and a cancer support group. That’s where the paths of Darla (Brittany Snow) and Bailey (Sam Richardson) cross in the new rom-com Hooking Up. What ensues can be loosely defined as a sex comedy, but one that doesn’t rely on raunchy gimmicks. Both Snow (Pitch Perfect), who also served as a producer on the film, and Richardson (VEEP, Detroiters) recently spoke with Den of Geek about making a sex positive comedy that also dives into the nuances and grey areas of…

What Does VOD Mean for Movie Theaters?

A Greek philosopher once said there is nothing permanent except change. It’s a timely thought during this moment of uncertainty. Even in the limited purview of the entertainment industry and cinema, what we took for granted only three weeks ago about moviegoing, and the wall between theatrical and VOD release, is coming down. It began with Eon Productions and MGM moving No Time to Die from its April launch to late November in light of the growing coronavirus crisis. They were the first to move, but they wouldn’t be the last. Almost all studios have now pushed their major releases…

The Lovebirds Headed to Netflix Streaming for Debut

The Lovebirds, the romantic comedy-mystery hybrid starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae, will now debut on Netflix in lieu of a theatrical release.  Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the film, pulled it from its original big screen opening, which was supposed to be April 3, as the coronavirus pandemic began to take hold of the world. The Lovebirds was one of two major Paramount titles, the other being A Quiet Place Part II, that the studio took off its schedule as the full ramifications of COVID-19 began to be felt. According to Deadline, the deal for The Lovebirds has been…

Where to Stream New Movies in Theaters on VOD

Once upon a time, the theatrical window that comprised the weeks or months between a movie’s opening weekend and home media debut was a sacred thing. It was so pronounced, it led to debates between famous directors and other members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as to whether streaming giant Netflix should even be allowed to win Oscars. That all went out the window a week ago. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to change in big and small ways how people lead their lives, it’s left the moviemaking industry in a state of anxious upheaval. Currently…

Wonder Woman 1984 Streaming Rumor Denied by WB

According to a report published by The Wrap, there have been high-level discussions about WB releasing Wonder Woman 1984 straight to consumers via VOD, as opposed to its June 5 release date. This rumor comes as the growing coronavirus pandemic has shut theaters down across North America and the rest of the planet, and it suggests there have been “preliminary” discussions held by Toby Emmerich, Warner Pictures Group chairman, and his top advisers. Additionally, these conversations were allegedly kept from director Patty Jenkins and producer Charles Roven. However, studio executives and filmmakers have emphatically refuted the suggestion, including to The…

The Mandalorian Season 2: Rosario Dawson to Play Ahsoka Tano

The Mandalorian’s upcoming second season will see the Disney+ series give the ultimate form of validation to fans of the Disney-owned mothership franchise’s animated alley of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels: A live-action version of perennial favorite Ahsoka Tano! Rosario Dawson has been cast to play Ahsoka on The Mandalorian Season 2, according to Slashfilm. The move, which will be the first formal migration of a major character from the animated sphere to the live-action arena (since Boba Fett, anyway), is certainly exciting and unprecedented in the modern era. Yet, it’s not outside the realm of…

Altered Carbon: Resleeved Ending Explained

This article contains spoilers for Altered Carbon: Resleeved. At first glance, Altered Carbon: Resleeved would appear to have a fairly pat ending. The villain is dead, and everyone goes their own way. It’s an uncharacteristically hopeful conclusion for this normally dark cyberpunk story, aside from the fact that Hideki Tanaseda, the latest Meth to compel services from Takeshi Kovacs, is not quite finished with the last Envoy. But even that leaves open the possibility for more animated action in this universe, whether it’s with the same secondary characters or not. Dark Phoenix Hits Streaming

It took long enough, but the last chapter of the original X-Men movie saga is finally going to arrive on streaming. With the proliferation of streaming services and apps out there, there was some question about whether Dark Phoenix would make it to Netflix. Or perhaps since it’s a former 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) production, and thus under the Disney umbrella, whether its streaming home would be Disney+ or the similarly Disney-owned Hulu. That isn’t the case, though, and Dark Phoenix will stream on HBO Now. Considering that it stars Sophie Turner as its title character, it’s…
