Shaun of the Dead Gets Coronavirus Remix from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost

Over 15 years since Simon Pegg and Nick Frost discovered a shortcut to the Winchester in Shaun of the Dead, the pair are reprising their zombie killers from the beloved cult classic. And for good reason. While in the Edgar Wright movie, Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Frost) dealt with a very different type of viral outbreak—something to do with the dreaded Z-word—their experience is a great case study in what not to do right now. Both in terms of zombies and the novel coronavirus. In the below public service announcement video, the two riff on one of Shaun of the…

China’s Movie Theaters Prepare to Open as Coronavirus Crisis Slows

There is a light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, and it may shine on big screens. While the box offices in North America and Europe are shutting down in containment efforts, China’s theaters could reopen by the end of the month, according to Variety. The People’s Republic of China closed its theaters nationwide on Jan. 23. The state-owned China Film Group, which oversees theaters, schedules film openings and produces movies, may reopen its Beijing offices as early as next week. The plan should see the country’s theaters begin opening doors by mid-to-late April. “Our cinema is preparing to…

Altered Carbon: Resleeved Review

This review contains spoilers for Altered Carbon: Resleeved. Is Altered Carbon: Resleeved an anime in an Altered Carbon sleeve or Altered Carbon in an anime sleeve? On the one hand, this animated tale incorporates plenty of elements we’ve come to recognize in a story involving the last Envoy, Takeshi Kovacs, including digital consciousnesses, hotel AIs, and even some underlying backstory involving Kovacs’ long lost sister, Rei. On the other hand, the organized crime story involving a Yakuza boss and rituals of succession, honor codes, and sword battles dives deep into the Japanese origins of the story form and appeals to…

22 Best Documentaries on Netflix UK

With the scope of possibility in visual effects and the boundlessness of imagination there are very few places we cannot explore in fiction nowadays… that is unless we explore stories that are stranger than fiction. There is a tangible thirst for the real; the overwhelming response to Netflix documentary Making a Murderer in the news and social media, as just one example, exposes the desire for and importance of representation of real events available to be streamed to a large audience. We love a case we can really sink our teeth into and, whether on screen or off, documentary even…

Star Wars: Rian Johnson Laments Lack of The Last Jedi Test Screenings

Rian Johnson has certainly been on quite the public journey with his 2017 Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. From initial enthusiasm that the Looper director would be helming a movie in the rebooted Lucasfilm franchise, to a mixed reaction from fans when it finally emerged, to a continuing backlash from the kind of dedicated cadre of very online angry folk who could probably find the energy to tell Elsa from Frozen where she could stick her advice to “let it go”, to his triumphant cinematic return last year with the acclaimed Knives Out just as the Star Wars fandom…

Could Onward Soon Be on Disney Plus Streaming?

What a difference a week can make. Less than two Sundays ago, the conversation around Disney and Pixar’s Onward was about how the film opened in first place at the box office with $39.1 million—an okay if somewhat disappointing number for a Pixar movie. Still, it was a much more upbeat story than seven days later when it was number one again… and saw a stunning 73 percent drop-off between weekends. Of course what happened in between was realistic anxiety about the coronavirus outbreak finally taking hold in North America while the World Health Organization declared the crisis to be…

Bloodshot: Vin Diesel Superhero Movies Goes to VOD Next Week

In what is becoming a familiar refrain after Universal Pictures opened the floodgates on Monday, a relatively popular new release is heading directly to video-on-demand as the coronavirus crisis worsens. This time it is Vin Diesel’s superhero actioner, Bloodshot, that is breaking through the theatrical window like some kind of cybernetic super soldier. Sony and Columbia Pictures’ Bloodshot, which debuted in third place at the box office this past weekend, will make its VOD debut on March 24. This very reasonable move is being made after the film already suffered from the historically low moviegoing attendance of the past week.…

Star Wars: What The Rise of Skywalker Book Adds to the Movie

This Star Wars article contains spoilers. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was polarizing, to say the least, and fans have pored and debated over its plot twists and script for the past few months. Revealing that Rey is a Palpatine in the tradition of Luke Skywalker’s reveal as Darth Vader’s son was just one of the strange and surprising elements. And it left more questions than answers in the end. The novelization, marketed as an “Expanded Edition” of the movie’s story, elaborates on Emperor Palpatine’s plan and the movie’s central relationship. Carrie Fisher’s role in the movie was limited…

Cats: Rian Johnson Asks Universal to Release the Butthole Cut

Cats, the 2019 CGI-laden live-action film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical, may have set its paws in the cement of notoriety for a variety of reasons, but it seems that it just provided a freaked, cabin-fever-afflicted world something of timely and intangible value: a cause. This one, however, is centered on the digital buttholes of anthropomorphic singing cats. Do we have your attention yet? In a welcome distraction, this week’s digital release of Cats has facilitated a rumor from writer Jack Waz, who, citing word-of-mouth sources, claims that the extensive process of finalizing the feline features of its…

I Got You Babe: The Best of Sonny and Cher Volume 1

Recommended I can never get enough of old musical and comedy variety shows these days. I remember them being rather cheesy from what I can remember of their original airings, but they are yet another thing that gets better with age. There were many of these throughout the 1960s and 70s, anchored by star hosts with a never-ending parade of different guest stars every week to do their own musical numbers and join in the comedy sketches. Sonny and Cher were two of the biggest stars in this genre- in 1971 they were set to take up residency for a…

Could Black Widow Premiere on Disney Plus?

On Tuesday morning (March 17), Disney finally announced that its next Marvel Studios tentpole, Black Widow, was being moved off its May 1 arrival to an indefinite release date later in the year. The news was hardly shocking at this point: with the ongoing spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all major theater chains in North America — as well as many worldwide — have shut their doors for anywhere from six to 12 weeks, which effectively sealed the Widow’s fate regardless of the Mouse’s decision. Since it’s difficult to predict how long this crisis will continue before the virus…

Black Widow Movie Release Date Pushed Back

Disney was really trying to avoid pushing back the release of Black Widow, their next big Marvel movie, but the announcement of many major U.S. cinema chains’ temporary closure in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, has forced the corporation’s hand. Originally set to hit theaters on May 1st, Black Widow has been pulled from the release calendar, with no new release date set as of this time. According to Variety, Black Widow isn’t the only upcoming release Disney has just pulled from its release calendar. The Personal History of David Copperfield (a Searchlight film) and The Woman in the…

Will Mulan End Up Premiering on Disney Plus?

The world is changing rapidly. With each day bringing more news related to the global coronavirus pandemic, folks from continent to continent are adjusting to a new normal that includes phrases like “social distancing” and “flattening the curve.” That also applies to the entertainment industry, which has been reeling from the menace of COVID-19. And among movie studios, few have made bolder moves than Disney, which last week delayed its releases of Mulan, The New Mutants, and Antlers. Indefinitely. In the time since that development, Disney has released the animated hit Frozen 2 on Disney+ two months early as a…
