Science fiction is one of our more dynamic and inspired genres as a species. We need something to aspire to as much as we need something to fear. Science fiction provides both. And the best science fiction can…

How The Hunt Became the Most Controversial Movie of the Year

It was last August when a movie called The Hunt, scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures in the usually arid moviegoing month of September, became a national news story. Word got around that the film, written by Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Nick Cuse (The Leftovers), was a liberal screed about a bunch of political lefties hunting and killing right-wingers in a variation on the old The Most Dangerous Game narrative. The outrage machine then went into overdrive. With recent mass shootings in three states—California, Ohio, and Texas—still fresh, the current occupant of the White House and his allies jumped…

F9 Delayed a Year Due to Coronavirus Pandemic

The Fast and Furious movies like to say they’re all about “family,” which might be why it’s a prudent move for Universal Pictures to protect its family of fans during a global crisis. Hence Universal made the extraordinary step Thursday to delay Fast & Furious 9, or F9, almost a full 11 months past its original May 22 global launch. The film is now slated to open on April 2, 2021 in both the U.S. and UK. The move follows in the footsteps of multiple high-profile blockbuster films that have been delayed, one indefinitely. The first indication that Hollywood would…

Why Bloodshot is Vin Diesel’s First Starring Superhero Role

With a number of successful film series on his resume – the Fast and Furious movies, the Riddick trilogy and even a couple of xXx entries — Vin Diesel is practically a franchise unto himself. Yet, his voice work as Groot in four Marvel Cinematic Universe movies aside, Diesel has somewhat surprisingly never played a lead superhero in a movie ripped right out of the pages of a comic book. Until now. Diesel stars in Bloodshot, an action thriller based on the Valiant Comics title about a technologically enhanced super soldier who struggles to remember his past life and keep…

A Quiet Place 2 Release Date Delayed Due to Coronavirus Outbreak

A Quiet Place was a massive success story at the box office in 2018. The movie was directed by John Krasinski, who also co-wrote it with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. So it is with great fanfare that Krasinski returned as both the writer and director for the sequel, aptly titled A Quiet Place Part II.  A lot of elements in A Quiet Place remain unexplored, like the origin of the creatures, how much of the rest of the Earth is affected by them, and how even our central family managed to escape to a farm. All of which could, and even appears…

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Have Coronavirus

Tom Hanks has tested positive for coronavirus. The actor confirmed that he and wife Rita Wilson became ill while on location in Australia’s Gold Coast region during filming on Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming Elvis Presley movie, set to be released by Warner Bros in October, 2021. In the film, Luhrmann’s first feature since 2013’s The Great Gatsby, Hanks stars as Colonel Tom Parker alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rufus Sewell and Olivia DeJonge. The news was posted across Hanks’ official social media accounts, as Deadline broke the story: pic.twitter.com/pgybgIYJdG— Tom Hanks (@tomhanks) March 12, 2020 “Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here…

Halloween Kills Cast, Plot, Release Date, and all the Latest News

It used to be that ‘remake’ was something of a dirty word in horror after audiences were bombarded with substandard do-overs at the start of the 2000s (The Omen, The Wicker Man, The Last House on the Left, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, we could go on…) But despite early cynicism David Gordon Green’s new take on John Carpenter’s seminal stalk ‘n slash was well received by fans and critics alike and did great box office. So when it was announced that Halloween 2018 would form part of a trilogy with Halloween Kills coming in 2020 and…

Contagion: A Warning About Lies in a Crisis

I refuse to eat peanuts at a bar. It’s nothing personal against them, as they can make for an excellent snack, but like cashews, pretzels, chips, or any other miscellaneous “open” food, it remains open to anyone. And I saw a scene begin like this in Contagion nine years ago. Actually it’s the first scene of the movie when Gwyneth Paltrow’s Beth Emhoff sits at an airport bar, sweating profusely. As she absently speaks on the phone with an illicit lover, director Steven Soderbergh’s camera is far less interested in her conversation than where her hands are going: on the…

The Hunt Review

I really want to like The Hunt. As an object of scorn and right wing media smears, not to mention a one-time shiny distraction for our ever distracted president, the horror-comedy in which liberal elites hunt red state “deplorables” was maligned and distorted by Fox News’ funhouse mirror. But despite all that, The Hunt just really wants to be liked by everyone on both sides of the aisle with its straight down the middle “you’re all nuts” commentary.  Granted the movie is certainly the product of liberal filmmakers turning election cycle politics into blood sport, but only in the most…

Bloodshot Review

“You don’t have to have a history to have a future,” Guy Pearce’s Dr. Emil Harting says to Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel), the titular hero of director David S.F. Wilson’s Bloodshot. Garrison is a soldier whose shattered body has been restored to life by Harting via microscopic robots called “nanites” that all but replaced Garrison’s blood. With enhanced strength, speed, durability and healing powers, Garrison is all but indestructible–yet his memories are the one thing he cannot seem to retrieve. But Bloodshot does, of course, have a history as one of the flagship titles of Valiant Comics, a long independent…

New Dracula Movie Coming from Blumhouse

“To die, to truly be dead,” Bela Lugosi said in Hollywood’s classic adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, “that must be glorious.” But beloved monsters never die, no matter how many stakes you drive through their hearts. They are rebooted. Following the box office and critical success of The Invisible Man, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse production banner is looking to resurrect Dracula, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While Universal hasn’t officially signed on, they do have a first-look deal with Blumhouse and a cloakroom of capes for the Transylvanian Count. The new Dracula movie will be helmed by Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s…

New Jungle Cruise Trailer Arrives

Dwayne Johnson‘s big screen backlog is a proverbial battle royal of major movies, but few are as intriguing given the pedigree of who he’s partnered with (i.e. not Vin Diesel or Jason Statham) as Disney’s Jungle Cruise. Based on a Disneyland and Disney World riverboat theme park ride, this branded project is clearly designed to recreate the same lucrative ride-to-movie magic of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, but with Emily Blunt co-starring in the film, it also looks intentionally evocative of classic Hollywood star two-handers, most notably being Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn in The African Queen (1951). Director Jaume Collet-Serra…

Peter Rabbit 2 Release Date Delayed Because of Coronavirus Fears

Peter Rabbit hit theaters in February 2018 as a hybrid live-action/CGI franchise reboot that injected the classic stories of Beatrix Potter with contemporary energy. The result was a film that – akin to the stealthy precision of Peter in Farmer McGregor’s garden – quietly banked $115 million domestically, totaling $351.2 million globally, and was even the U.K.’s top family film of 2018, out-grossing Pixar’s Coco. Consequently, it didn’t take Sony Pictures long to consider Peter Rabbit 2, giving it the official greenlight and a 2020 release date; a move made just one month after the original’s release. Indeed, main cast…

How Bloodshot May Connect to a Valiant Cinematic Universe

Cape Town, South Africa native David S.F. Wilson makes his feature directorial debut with Bloodshot, the new Vin Diesel action/sci-fi thriller based on the superhero character created by Valiant Comics. After launching a visual effects company in his native country with Sharlto Copley (who has gone on to success as an actor in movies like District 9 and Maleficent), Wilson was recruited by future Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller to come work at his Blur Studio effects and animation house in Venice, California. After rising to Creative Director there, Wilson has now made the leap to the…

The Origin of Outbreak Movies

Beginning with The Andromeda Strain in 1971, disease movies quickly established themselves as a commonplace cinematic subgenre, usually within the science fiction umbrella. In the years that followed, we got the likes of Outbreak, Contagion, Virus, The Stand, 12 Monkeys, The Crazies, 28 Days Later, most post-Night of the Living Dead zombie movies, The Omega Man, Winds of Terror, and dozens of others. It only made sense. Despite antibiotics and advances in medical research, new dread diseases continued to crop up on an annual basis, each one threatening (for a while there anyway) to become a pandemic that could wipe…

Justice League Dark: Apocalypse War – Trailer and Release Date for DC Animated Movie

Since the title was announced for Justice League Dark: Apokalips War, the biggest question in some fans’ minds was “hang on, who now?” Justice League Dark, the team of magical heroes that includes Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing and a rotating cast of lesser-known mystics, has always had a very specific lane and focus: the supernatural. Not typically included in that mystical lane are Darkseid, Desaad, Apokalips, or the rest of the Fourth World heroes or villains. But the new trailer for the upcoming DC Animated feature sheds some new light on that puzzling “why:” because they’re all that’s left. Here’s…

Emily Blunt Reacts to Fantastic Four Casting Rumors

It is fair to say Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are having another moment in their creative and personal partnership. Two years after the acting power couple surprised audiences with the dread-inducing A Quiet Place, the pair are returning with A Quiet Place: Part II, which is all the more impressive when one considers they both had hesitations about following up what Krasinski imagined was “a love letter” to their children. As early social media reactions have confirmed, A Quiet Place: Part II recaptures that same grueling tension of the first movie, with Krasinski now (mostly) behind the camera, and…

Acting Legend Max von Sydow Dies at 90

Stage and screen acting legend Max Von Sydow, who starred in The Seventh Seal and appeared in The Exorcist, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Flash Gordon, and Game of Thrones, died on March 8 at the age of 90, according to Variety. “It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow,” his wife, the producer Catherine Brelet, said in a statement. Von Sydow made his Hollywood debut as Jesus in the 1965 Biblical epic The Greatest Story Ever Told.  This gave him the authority to…
